2004 Superduty Shuddering

Good morning gentlmen, and ladies. I have a 2004 Superduty 4x4 with the 6.0 and the Torqshift tranny. It has 158,000 miles on it. Over the the last 2 weeks my truck has started to shudder or buck going down the road. Her is what it is doing. It only does it in overdrive. It does it when it is not pulling, but cruising and I try to accelerate slowly. If I accelerate harder, it downshifts and doesn't shudder. After the transmission temp reaches normal operating temperature, it doesn't do it. When I put it in Tow Haul it doesnt do it. When it is cold, sometimes it shakes the truck violently! Also while the shuddering is happening, the engine sounds perfectly smooth and my RPMs do not change at all. I have no indications or warning lights that anything is wrong either. Otherwise the transmission has no problems. It shifts great and no noises of any kind. My fluid levels are correct. My fluid is red with only about 4000 miles on it. It is Mercon LV. No burnt smell. My filter in the tranny has been changed also.

And last but not least, I have the Bully Dog Triple loaded. Now to be fair, I am not looking for everyone to jump straight on the Bully Dog. I say that because I have read my stories here and on the web about the troubles with these transmissions including my problem. And a lot of the cases did not include the Bully Dog system. I am not saying that I am ruling it out by any means. I would not be suprised if it were in the equation.

I have tried in vain to get someone to look at it before the Holiday, so it hasn't been scanned yet. Some suspect my injectors, but it only does it in "overdrive" and my RPMs are rock steady when it happens. I am going to set my settings back to factory and see if that does anything, although at this point I doubt it will help.

I know this has been long and I apologize, but I need some help here gentleman, from someone who has had the same problem and has overcome it. I would certainly appreciate any direction and advice from the people who have delt with this porblem, either experiencing it, or fixing it. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving! Troy

I just went and set my truck back to factory settings with the Bully Dog and took her out cold. It still shuddered but not nearly as hard. What do you think? Anyone?

No, the Torqshift 5R110W is a rock solid transmission. The only known issue with the transmission were in the early ones (like yours) and those were corrected. What you probably read was the issues surrounding the 4R100 transmission, which was not as good stock.

Either way, most here would not recommend the Bully Dog tune on the 6.0L PSD. I am not a PSD owner, so I will not comment either way, but to simply point out that the a 5R110W transmission should easily last 400k miles before a rebuild is needed.

Thanks Redford. Since you are my only reply so far, what can the Bully Dog do to cause transmission shudder?

Are you sure its the trans shuddering and not the engine missing a beat?
If engine, it could be one of several things.
CPS, ICP, IPR, just to name some.
Yep, get the codes.

Guessing that its not the trans.... Alot of us on herehave or have had the same issue so ill try to help with a few of the common searches that fix the issue.

Ebp sensor and clean tube , icp sensor, Ipr valve, and Map sensor... Thatll get you started, mine cleared up with a faulty EBP and IPR sensor. The resident experts will chime in but search these issues until backup arrives

Any codes ?

While you are cleaning things, do the EGR valve also, if you still have one.

Well, Well, Well!

I went and had the truck scanned. You could have knocked me over with a feather! Heare are the codes:

P0281 Cylinder 7 Contribution/Balance

P0299 Turbocharger/Supercharger "A" Underboost Condition

P0341 Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or single sensor)

P0470 Exhaust Pressure Sensor "A" Circuit

P0671 Cylinder 1 Glow Plug Circuit / Open

P0673 Cylinder 3 Glow Plug Circuit / Open

P0677 Cylinder 7 Glow Plug Circuit / Open

P2614 Camshaft Position Output Circuit / Open

Why am I not showing a check engine light?
Ok, now what and how much money? lol

Unless you hate your Tranny throw the Bulley Dog in the Garbage. Those BD kills the Tranney in these.

Look like your main problem is the contributation code and you either have a bad injector or a injector harness issue. I would start with this contribe code cuz it will cause the P0299 code for over/under boost in order for proper boost operation everything must work properly as boost starts with the exhaust
maybe a bad Ficm driver for that cylinder but not to likly on this

some of the CMP/CKP codes are from the stall events or the Violent shaking

I think that you basicaly have a bad injector

Sounds like you are having the same issue I am having... When I'm at idle warm it sounds fine and smooth if I try and hold it at 900rpm it gets rough... Other than that my issues are the same. My thread is called "I believe my new diesel has a miss" check it out... Some good info there.. I also have no dodes at all.. Except an egr flow code that was there before the issue started... Imma just get an icp sensor and give it a go.. Also a EBP... Though they might not help I can rule them out

Since I am having problems with the number 7 injector and the 1, 3, and 7 glow plug, might I have a harness issue? They are all on the same side.
