not going into gear

FYI: My 52 F1 has a Chevy 327 and a Chevy 400 auto transmission.

I just took my truck out and I noticed it took a couple of seconds to pop into drive. As I was driving I started to hear this high pitched whining sound. I headed home and when I went to back up it wouldn'd go into reverse or drive. I looked at the linkage didn't see anything loose. Then I moved the linkage and it clicked into place then I was able to go into reverse.

Any idea of what this is?

Thanks.

A Chevy problem, that should be discussed on a Chevy site - Not dissin you but I know what would happen if I went to the Chevy Barn and asked a question about my Ford engine and tranny thats in my 51 3100

It sounds like it's low on fluid. Did you check it?
