wiring harness irritation

Okay been planning on rewiring the 54 f600 for a while so I ordered a new one from macs. I ordered a 55 dash harness because 55 was the first year for the plastic coated wiring and they had the turn signal wires built in. I screwed that up! The light switches are different and I learned that in 55 they had oil and generator lights instead of gauges like used in the 53s and 54s. I decided to just send it back and order a true 54 harness and live with the cloth coated wires. I suppose it worked for the first 57 years, why cant it work now? So i got back on macs website and was looking at the 54 harnesses and it says in the description "use with generator and oil lights" well I dont want lights I want the gauges!!! So can this harness be easily modified? I already fixed the turn signal wires with my own wires so thats done and out of the picture. I can get one exactly as original from carpenter but they are 55 dollars more.

here is what I'm guessing:

"light" type gauge uses a sensor/sender that grounds out with no pressure, thus, illuminating the light.

Gauge type gauge uses a sensor/sender thats resistance changes as pressure increases.

Both probably use a single wire hook up. I think it'll work just fine.

Well the light ones have a plastic body that goes into the back of the gauge assembly there are two wires going to each bulb, so I assume what you said is exactly correct, but can I just cut those wires and just put terminal ends on them and hook them up to the gauges? I want them to read accurately.

I'm thinking that you won't know until you try. If it doesn't work out, you'll probably have to buy sending units compatible to the gauges. I think it will be obvious if it's correct or not.
