Remote Locks - Programming Transmitters

Remote Locks - Programming Transmitters
Hi all,
I've got a 2002 Excursion Limited that came without any of the original remote lock transmitters (fobs). I was given one by the sales guy and I also bought a new one from the parts department at the dealer. I've been having trouble getting these transmitters to program to the truck.
Getting into programming mode has been problematic, sometimes I can get into that mode, sometimes the truck is stubborn. Even after entering programming mode, neither of the transmitters seem to be communicating with the receiver. I can hit buttons on either of the transmitters multiple times and get no response from the truck.
The sales guy said that it's possible that I need to press and hold a button on the transmitter before entering programming mode (in contrast to the owner's manual that says to enter programming mode then press any button on a transmitter within 20 seconds). So far, I have not been able to get the truck into programming mode with a button pressed on a transmitter.
#1) Does anyone know how to consistently get into programming mode?
#2) Does anyone know if there is truth to the sales guy's advice as far as holding a button prior to accessing programming mode?
#3) Is the remote lock feature on these trucks prone to failure? If so, what fails?
#4) Does anyone know how I can tell if I even have the right transmitter?
Signed - My wrist is tired from turning the key 8 times in a row so many times...
Thanks,
Chris
