08 XLT or 06 Lariat?

Hey guys, been lurking for a little while, but pretty new to the forum. Question for y'all: What would you go for between these two trucks (both 4x4 shortbeds):

2008 XLT SuperCab 6.4 PowerStroke with 107,000 miles for ~20k

OR

2006 Lariat SuperCab 6.0 PowerStroke with 75,000 miles for ~24k

I know that the 6.4 makes more power stock and has more power potential, but I am torn between the "luxury" of the Lariat and the "go-fast" factor of the 6.4. That and most likely the 6.4 will be more expensive in the long term due to the need for a DPF delete and tune and lower fuel economy (although the fuel economy is only a secondary factor...the wife and I carpool 90% of the time in our Civic). It seems that the consensus is that the 6.4 is generally more reliable than the 6.0, but when it goes, it GOES and it goes expensively.

Thoughts? Thanks guys!

Get the 6.4 with an extended warranty.

Before i bought either truck I'd verify the maintance and warranty coverages if any are left.

I'd also ask for an oasis on both so maybe you can see some history.

Do your homework on the 6.0 and you have a chance of getting a truck with a perfectly good engine with less miles, and a nicer interior that it sounds like you'd prefer (I'd pick the pre-08 interior before the update, personal preference). But if you aren't careful with checking the motor out and you end up buying someone's issues, then you're in for an expensive trip.

Yep, just bought a ScanGauge II last week in anticipation of looking at trucks to make sure that they are "good." My dad has an '06 6.0 that has a bit over 60k on it, which he has not had any problems with yet (knock on wood), so I'm not afraid of the 6.0 so to speak, just wondering how people feel on the the differing factors (6.4 vs 6.0, 08 XLT vs 06 Lariat, miles on the truck, price, etc.)

My dad and I both have 07s, his is the Lariat and mine is the XLT. Honestly the only differences I notice switching between the two are the ugly wood grain on the dash, and the weird climate control system. His leather is nice, but I have seat covers, so no real difference there. The data center on the 05-07s is cool I guess, but we do everything through an Insight CTS on both, so no difference. I have back up sensors, he has a power sliding rear window, even trade. I understand how my A/C works and not his, so I'd pull for the XLT there. Basically what I'm saying is that IMO the '06 Lariat is nothing exceptional over an XLT, just leather seats and a fancy A/C. Not worth $4k by itself, the '06 is only better if you want the lower mileage 6.0 over the higher mileage 6.4.

It sounds like you're planning on playing with the engine either way, so if both of those are running fine then pick the look you like better and go for that.

Get the 6.0, it looks way better than the 6.4(My own opinion please, no one take it to heart)

Do you homework on ANYTHING you buy, not just the 6.0.

Any other thoughts out there on this? I'm leaning towards the '06, provided I can talk the price down a bit, for a couple of reasons, namely that 20k for a 2008 XLT seems really low, even with 107k miles on it, and the dealer lot it is sitting at is one of those tiny gravel parking lot country car dealers (not that there is anything wrong with those, it just doesn't engender confidence...). But man...the 6.4 is so easy (or it appears to be..) to get a lot of power out of...

The 6.0 is just as easy to get power out of, you justhave to be smart in how you do it. There are some inhearant weaknesses in the 6.0 that you will find without the proper guages and research. My truck has been tuned since it had about 15k on it. I have had issues but none related to tuning. I have had the turbo rebuilt a few times, my fault for letting it sit, the egr/oil cooler replaced an a calibration back in early 06...thats it.

I havent had any head gasket issues but im not running a hot tune or drive it like a race car. First mod is guages, then look at custom tunes and only custom tunes for the 6.0, as long as everything is good with the engine and transmission.

Also if buying from a mom and pop I would spend the money find a good dealer ship and have them look it over and run an OASIS on it, if it comes back clean buy what you like.

Yeah, that and the 6.0 seems to generally get better fuel economy than the 6.4, and I don't have to worry about the DPF. Meh, we'll see, probably going to go look at at least one of them this weekend...probably both..unfortunately neither is particularly close to me or each other. I THINK that the 6.4 is a manual transmission, and if that is the case, it is going to be REALLY hard to pass up! Any particular things I should look for on the 6.4? I have looked over the "before you buy a 6.0" list, just wondered if there was something similar for the 6.4?

OASIS report on either/both before going any further..

after that its kinda which interior do you like better.

cuz the frame/suspension/trans is the same between those years.

so your really left with a descision between interior design and 6.0-6.4

personaly i luv the 08+ look WAY better. but its totaly a personal call at that point.

I don't know where you're at, but I would get this. Same power and mpg while towing as a 6.0psd without the problems. If you need more power put a supercharger on it. This is only my opionion but I think the 05-07 are the best looking Ford pickups weather its an XLT or Lariat so my vote is the 06. To me the 6.0 is a little easier to work on compared to the 6.4. I am sure once you remove all the EGR junk and other emissions related goodies of the 6.4 it might not be bad to work on either, but when I open the hood on one I see a train wreck.

Oh well. I just picked 2 off autotrader that had V10s. I drive a 18 wheeler everyday so I don't want to listen to a diesel when I'm off. I love my 03 gasser.

I went through the same thing. '08 6.4 XLT vs. '07 6.0 Lariat. Both same price so that wasn't a factor. I ended up with the 6.0. The lariat is nice, (heated seats are amazing) but that was hardly a factor in my decision. The high repair costs of the 6.4 as well as the fact that its much harder for a DIY'er to wrench on is what scared me away from it. If you've got money to burn, then honestly the 6.4 is probably better. Like you mentioned it can make some serious power with just intake tune and exhaust.
