I have a 2003 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 4.6 with 210k miles. The 4x4 high light has been flashing and 4H has not been working, only 4L. First I replaced the sensor on top of the rear diff because I had an occasoinal ABS light come on under hard acceleration so I thought it may be related. Sensor didnt work so I changed the t-case control module and still no change. The 4H and 4L lights come on at start up and then go off but the 4H light comes back after a while and flashes. Any Ideas? 4L works fine but winters comin real soon and my wife cant be driving around in 4L in the snow. I'm startin to get fed up with this damn Explorer but I have too much into it to stop now. New engine, transmission, complete exhaust, brakes, wheel bearings, control arms, ball joints and the list goes on and on, it never ends!

 

Do you happen to know anybody with a professional scan tool that could access the diagnostic code or codes for the 4WD system? That could point you in the right direction pretty quickly.

My initial thought was the transfer case shift motor, is that what you changed when you refer to the "transfer case control module", or are you referring to the 4WD control module? The transfer case shift motor is mounted on the transfer case itself. The control module is mounted behind the glove box.

No I really dont know anyone with a scan tool like that and I sure as hell aint gonna ask the dealer to do it for me. I did not suspect the shift motor because it still shifts into 4L just fine. I replaced the transfer case shift module which is the one behind the glove box. Maybe I will change the motor and switches while i'm at it. LOL
