1952 F-1 3 speed transmission

I have been searching for a good thread about my transmission and my eyes are crossed now so I am just going to take my butt chewing and ask . how hard is it to replace and where can i get the oil seals for my transmission. I have oil dripping from my bell housing and It looks thicker then motor oil so I am thinking transmission oil. I know my rear main seal on the motor is most likely leaky but who's isn't right? I was thinking about about pulling the trans and replacing the seals if possible. Another question I have is the truck shifts really good when shifting up, but when down shifting from 3rd to 2nd, but from 2nd to 1st is almost impossible. Is this normal or do I have a sync thats worn out.?

It is always tricky shifting down as there is no sync's in the original transmission, I assume that is what you have. You just have to find the right rpms to shift. On my truck with the 4 speed I let the engine rev down to almost idle then shift to neutral than rev up about 200rpms then shift down to next gear. You don't even have to use the clutch. Sorry, I can't help you with your seals.

Colin is right, 1st is not synchro. Double-clutching likely won't help, you'll just make your trans into a pile of chips.

There is no oil seal in the front of the trans. It has a slinger and the bearing itself has a shield on the front side to contain oil. Could your trans be overfilled?

Its very possible I over serviced it. I changed the oil a while back and filled it to the top plug like the Manuel said but... its not a lot of oil coming out, hell it might be motor oil from the main seal, it just looked thick. As far as shifting goes, Its normal to have to come to a stop in order to get back into first with out grinding then?

Usually you can tell if it's gear oil by that wonderful smell. Take a whiff of the dripping oil & compare it to the container of oil that you used to service the trans.

Yes that is normal, 1st gear is for starting out, once you are rolling 2nd will handle the slow speed for turning and such.

First gear has no synchros. 2nd gear does. You should be able to downshift from 3rd to 2nd w/o grinding. You will have to come to a complete stop when going down to first. After stopping it helps to put the selector in 2nd gear and then immediatly into first. By so doing you stop the internal gears from turning and first gear will engage w/o clashing.

Awesome, after hearing all this I might not be pulling the trans after all.
