I just picked up a used odometer from a 2005 f350 T.D. wreck, the mileage reads 56,342 ,my original reads 235,047. Can anyone tell me how to get the used one to read the same as the original?.. Trying to keep it honest

 

No possible way. That is to keep people honest. Dealers will just put on a sticker next to the speedo with the old mileage on it.

 

I would bet if a dealer installs it that Carfax would also pick it up, all of them I have seen say "Add xxx miles"

 

Your not going to get the odometer to match, can't change mileage numbers. If the mileage could be changed every shady car dealer would be turning back odometers to make the vehicles worth more. A relative had one changed on his crown vic at the Ford dealer. The new odometer started at zero so you had to add the old odometer mileage to get the actual number. Since he used the dealer it showed up in an oasis report.

 

I guess I won't be buying anything from this person....

 

Why? He's trying to get the odometer he wants to install to read the actual mileage that's on the truck. What's wrong with that?

 

I was thinking the same thing. It would be different if he was trying to roll an odometer back but he's trying to get the used one he picked up to reflect the actual mileage of the truck.

Of course, if you really wanted to roll back the odometer, it's as easy as what the OP just did. Find a lower mileage cluster from a junkyard. That's why we have Carfax.

 

It's just a piece of non-volatile memory. Saying it is impossible to get at and modify the bits is very difficult to believe.

However, all of the tools I've found in the last few minutes each run over $6,000. Have you asked a dealer yet? If they know your story, and can verify the actual mileage of the vehicle, I'm sure they can make the "new" one match.

I don't know what the limit is now, but at some point the mileage no longer matters, and the vehicle becomes "exempt"... that point used to be 100,000 miles, but that was back when odometers only had 5 digits + tenths.

 

I'm sure it's one of those things that varies by state. Here in MN, mileage is required on the title for all vehicles less than 10 years old. When selling a vehicle, you have to declare the current mileage and sign off on it. You also have to mark a box that indicates whether it's the actual mileage, the mileage in excess of the odometer's limits, or not the actual mileage. If the vehicle is more than 10 years old, you don't have to declare the mileage.

 

there are speedometer services usually used by rebuilders which can do it by sending them the cluster. they use a pc with a special program , and they have harnesses which plug from the pc into your cluster, and with a few keystrokes its done, simple,huh?

 

So what does a person do if their origional cluster quits working?
