5 to 6 spd manual transmission

Hello all. I've searched until my eyes are bloodshot and not from the beer. Is there an article or anything really about transplanting a 6 spd in place of the 5 spd on my 99 350 v10 4x4 duallie? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Did the 99 V10 come with a ZF-5 transmission? What are you hoping to gain by doing this swap? I know on the diesel side, the final drive ratio in 5th compared to 6th on the different transmissions is not enough to make any difference. The ZF-6 has a granny gear that is great for getting started up to about 5 mph, but on the highway, the rpm's wont be any different.

I'll have to check on what I currently have. I'm still learning about her.

What I'm hoping for is lower rpms at the higher highway speeds without changing the rear gear.

Thanks for helping a noob.

Stick around. There's lots to learn, and you learn most of it by asking questions. The way to lower rpm's at highway speeds is either with an aftermarket overdrive system (expensive) or by swapping gears in the rear end. Gears would be your cheapest option.

Okay. I think the manual transmission is the 4R100. Is this any help? Thanks everyone!
P.S. Semper Fi - I'm ex-Army special ops.

Insert Army joke here The 4R100 is an auto tranny.

ZF-5 was the 5 speed manual, which I believe they stopped using in 97 and the ZF-6 was the 6 speed manual introduced in 98 which was called the early 99 models.

I've dealt with some of you SO guys before. You're much better than the regular Army guys. You're almost tolerable

All kidding aside, Welcome to FTE and thanks for taking your turn standing watch over this great country.

Well @#$% on the transmission. Cool. Let's start figuring out how to make another manual transmission work for me if possible.

If your goal is lower highway rpm's, gears are the way to go. If you like the transmission idea, look into this http://www.gearvendors.com/fdrive.html

I believe the ZF6 is pretty much a ZF5 with a granny gear as far as the gear ratios go...

One alternative to going through a regear would be to get taller tires to reduce your effective gear ratio.

For example stock my truck came with a 28" diameter tire with 3.55 gears I currently have 30"'s on and my effective ratio is 3.31 and if I get the 33"'s I want then I going to be sitting in the neighborhood of 3.01.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Just for giggles, if I wanted to upgrade my 5 to a 6, does anyone know what the transmission tag number would be to upgrade to?

All I can find so far is:
Engine: Year(s): Tag Number:
<table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td align="left" bgcolor="#D3D3D3" valign="top">6.8L / 415</td> <td class="style1" align="left" bgcolor="#D3D3D3" valign="top">2002-2003</td> <td class="style1" align="left" bgcolor="#D3D3D3" valign="top">ID 1C34-BD</td></tr></tbody></table>
Thanks all!

Cool. I got that part. What I need is the exact manufacturing tag number (all transmissions, transfer cases, differentials, etc. have manufactures tags on them for identification purposes) for this upgrade (5 to 6 speed), I want to be precise if I decide to go through with it. Thanks!
