im in the process of pulling my 360 in my 1ton to resurface the flywheel and instal a new clutch, i have no evidance to suport it being a 390 other than the previous owner told me so...... and today was cleaning up my shop and noticed a 390 i bought had a different oil filter mount ..... why is this?
one mounts horizontal and one screws on the bottom verticly. i like the verticle one couse you dont make as much mess when i change the oil, can they be swapped?
i have no concrete evidance to suport the identity of ither engine as i havnt torn ither apart to inspect but i i know their 360/390's

One if for truck, the other for car due to fitment issues.
Yep. The vertical or horizontal fit fine in f250 4x4s (dunno about f100/150 4x4s). They are completely interchangeable as long as it fits.
If you want to check the cid all you need to do is:
remove the #1 and 4 spark plugs
turn it over by hand until #1 is @TDC
then take a dowel or otherwise straight rod of some sorts and insert through the spark plug hole marking on it the depth
now put the rod in #4 and mark the depth
The difference between the 2 marks is the stroke.
3.5"=352/360
3.784"=390

The horizontal filter does not fit in a 65 F100 4x4.

I thought you didn't know the cid? Highboys came with 360s and I'm not sure which filter mount was used originally. The benefits of the vertical mount are obvious so I'm sure a lot of them got swapped in if it didn't already come that way. When I bought mine, it already had the vertical mount.

iirc from Numberdummys posts, no 390s in 4x4s. Check that stroke...
will do!!!!! thats exactly what i was reffering to ...... ither way i only paid 200 bucks for a running engine, so if it ends up being a 360 i wouldnt be dissapointed at all. althou i will deffinatly rub it in the guys face that sold it to me... hes a budy of mine.....

btw i measured the sroke on the #1 cylender with a peice of broken dipstick and got 3.512 ...................im assumeing it doesnt mader where you meashure from in the spark plug hole as long as you refer to the same place on top and bottom dead center?

Yep. As long as you take the measurement in the same way on both cylinders it doesn't matter. Sorry it didn't turn out to be a 390. It'll give you something to work on anyways.
