1999-03 4x4 fuel mileage question

I see theres alot of threads on here, just trying to get a better answer.
i currently have a 2000 excursion lifted with a V10 and of course is horrible on gas.
My previous truck was a 1995 4x2 F350 Crew cab dually with 7.3 powerstroke 5-speed and it was horrible on fuel.
I was kickin around doing a cummins swap into my excursion because my friend has had 2 different cummins trucks that were great on fuel.but with what it will cost me im better of selling my truck and using money for down payment on a different truck.ive thought of getting a cummins but im a Ford man.im lookin for something powerful to pull my 29ft bumper pull camper part time and i also have a 20ft race car trailer i pull my fox mustang street strip car in.what kind of mileage are you getting with your 4x4 powerstroke trucks and towing and not towing and what style trucks are they?

17.25 MPG on a recent 700-mile highway trip (not towing) at 75-70 MPH with big exhaust manifold leaks and up-pipe leaks. I have since fixed the leaks, two injectors, and a turbo control problem I discovered. I have a 1400 mile trip coming up and I will post my economy somewhere on the forum. City is about 14-15, depending on hills, number of lights, speed limit, my mood, etc....

Winter-blended diesel and cold weather will knock the economy down a couple of MPG.

My truck alone only makes about 12 mpg! I'm not a dodge fan at all, but the cummins motor is very capable and ford cummins has some really nice kits. Is it cost effective...? But if your in love with your ex it would be a nice upgrade for sure! Surprised your '95 made what you call bad milage.

2000 SC 4x4 SRW flatbed on 285's 8500lbs empty. I average 14.9 overall on the last 5671 miles. 18.9 best, 11.8 worst. The average has dropped almost 1 mpg since the switch to winter fuel.

Don't buy the Cummins hype. They don't get that much better mileage. We normally have a group of six towing together, 4 Cummins, 2 PSD, we are usually a gallon or two apart at the pump. A few of these guy's claim 20+ mpg, but can't back it up.

BTW, buying a new truck to save on fuel is never cost effective, unless you can buy cheaper or the same as what you sell for.

Mines a 2002 crew cab auto, I averaged 16 in the summer. Now that fall is here and winter blend has arrived 13.6 is my new average. Sad but true. Same gas pump and everything.

13-14 mpg realistically (similar to 7.3 Rocket) on the street.

FWIW I was getting 15-16 mpg before I put my mudders on. I had Pirelli Scorpion 265/75-16s on the truck when I bought it, then I went to the 285/75-16 BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2s.

I own 2 powerstrokes a 1996 best truck ever owned 520,000 replace eng. but if I counted idle time I would say 1 million miles. I get 14-15 80 mph no trailer 10-11 towing no matter what I pull small tariler or gooseneck with 450b Johndeere dozer. Then a 1999 f350 worlds biggest peoce of crap ever eng. at 110.000 miles now has 290000 and will not start unless plugged in. Have replace glow plug system replaced injectors so I deal with that. Emtey I get 18-20 mpg towing same as the 96 10-11 just not dependable so on long trips I use the 1996. Ford should have to eat part of the problems that are common problems like the injector cups coming loose and no steering when breaking but that still is better then a Chevy or Cummins. I have a Chevy will not pull a sick lady of the night from her bed and I used a freinds Cummins to tow my Dozer would not pull over 60 up the mountains here and fuel miles were same as my Ford 10-11. Keep the Ford better seats better ride same millage more towing power.

13 mpg regardless.... Then again I expect it to go up a little once I finally swap my gears... Best ever 16.16... Unrealistic driving... Worse mileage ever 9 something winter idling speeding you name it I did it

Lets say you do a cummins swap into your truck... I bet you'll still get about the same mileage as any of us do because these trucks are a lot heavier than the dodge trucks. Mine tips the scales at 8000 empty... That was when i had 36x14.5 before I went to 38x15.5
