I bought another truck yesterday. Got a 97 ford F150 with 89k miles on all original powertrain for $3800. The guy that owned it passed away in 03 and the truck has been hardly used ever since.

And I'll be honest. I have been a chevy guy till 3 years ago when i bought an F250 7.3 diesel to pull my camper. My suburban just wouldn't do it safely. I'm extremely impressed with the 7.3.

Anyway, This truck I bought has a 5.4l engine. How is it for reliability? Any issues I should have checked? I have to bring it to the shop because one of the exhaust pipes is rotted in two.

Anyone know how i can find out what rear end is on it? All replies will be welcomed. Thanks.

 

I no longer have my 5.4 but it was great, it was very dependable for me, as far as the rear end run it through the VIN decoder that is on this page under the ARTICLES/SPECS tab at the top.

 

You have a 9.75 rear with a 5.4L, that is a hellova price if it is a 4wd.

 

This truck is not a 4 wheel drive and i think the rear end options are 3.08 or 3.55. The vin identifier didn't really tell me although it told me the towing capacity which would go for a 3.08 rear end so i think thats what i got. Appreciate the replies. How many miles has someone gotten out of their 5.4l engine?

 

Check the door tag for the axle code. VIN doesn't identify the axle.

My old 97 with a 5.4 had the 3.73 axle in it. I bought it in the fall of 03 with 113K on it and I sold it to my nephew back late last winter at 173K and he's still driving it strong.

 

Just crawl under it and check the axle tag if you want to know the ratio. It will be something like 3 55 or 3L55. The two examples I just showed would both be a 3.55 ratio and the one with the L is a locking diff

 

I use an 04 F250 crew cab, long bed 5.4 2WD for work that currently has around 180k miles and have never had any issues with it. This truck runs perfect. Excellent handling on the road also.
