Gas sending unit question

Took out the sending unit from my gas tank, 76 f150 4wd 19 gallon tank, and noticed the float had a square cut out of the bottom of the float. Is that supposed to be there or did someone do that. Want to know if I need a new one or not. Dont know if the guage worked or not got the truck to restore and they have been using the tank behind the seat and it did NOT work for that tank.

Any help would be great.

Nope, if it's got a large hole in it, then it's not a float. It's a "fill up with gas and sink."

THat is what I was thinking but it looked "professionally/factory" cut out so just wanted to make sure.
