Leaking coolant crossover?
On my 2000 f 150 5.4 motor it started running pretty rought the other day. Allthough the truck has the original motor and tranny with 402400 miles, I figured it could be anything. Verry shaky and rough especially in overdrive, then got progressively worse for the remainder of my thirty minute journey. got home and parked it. two days later drove it to my in-laws about twenty min away. again rough shifting and little to no power. about five min from destination the check engine light came on. once there i checked the tranny fluid and everything seemed good to go, but on the short drive home the shakyness just got worse and worse, extremely rough accelerating and deceleration. but seemed to be ok at crusing speeds.
went straight to my local autozone and had them pull the codes. Cylinder 1 missfire. so the next night pulled the truck in the shop and removed the #1 coil and the entire area between the coil and the spark plug was full of dirty oily nasty antifreeze. Figured sure as sunshine my motor was done for. But upon further inspection i could hear a slight sucking sound. In front of the intakes on top of the motor is a coolant crossover. cast aluminum, attaches to the thermostat. Has an O ring seal inside it and that is where i suspect the leak to be.
The guys at autozone had no idea what i was talking about, but the guys at the local O'Reiley's knew exactly what I needed and will have the part in tomoro morning. Gonna try to put new o rings on the crossover and a new boot on the coil. Hopefully this will take care of the issue. Once we had all the antifreeze out of the coil area and put it back together the truck ran fine. So #1 cylinder is getting spark as long as its not gettin drown by antifreeze.
Anyone else ever heard of these o rings goin bad on a 5.4? Any advice or insight?
