cleaning exhaust backpressure sensor

does the 6.0 have a exhaust backpressure sensor and tube? if so where are they located and has anyone cleaned the carbon buildup out of theirs?

I know where it is on an 05 and 06 but not an 03. Look at your drivers side exhaust manifold. It will have a tube that runs up to a sensor. Likely mounted on a braket near the thermostat. Hope that helps.

alright, do the tubes crack common like they do on 7.3l's? im going to pull mine off tomorrow and check it

I know that the ebp sensor has to do with actuation of the vgt solenoid, my turbo was rebuilt 1k miles ago and it literally sounds like the turbo turns on and off when it feels like, it is a 03 and straightpiped and you cant even hear the turbo, I've never heard of the vgt solenoid going bad so I'm going after the ebp sensor and tube

I am unaware of any problem with the EBP tube cracking. Clogging seems to be pretty common. You might verify your MAP sensor is good and the hose is clear as well. Again not sure on the 03 but mine is mounted on top of the HVAC box. It has a hose that runs to the passenger side of the intake.

Do you have any codes?

I think I remember something about the EBP Sensor not being used on the '03's. EBP is inferred from MAP and Baro. Cheezit (I think) posted the only problem he's seen is a shorted VRef wire at the sensor throwing a code.

well I have the sensor on the thermostat bracket so I'm not sure how valid this is, unless its used for something else, not sure but I'll take a look tomorrow and unhook everything and see how it runs after a cleaning just hope I dont break nothing

Sensors where on all the trucks. The function was changed by a software flash.

Oh okay, I see now

is this the most recent flash that turns off the sensor on 03's? I'm not sure what flash mine has

well I'm about to go pull it off anyway and see if I can clean anything

heres some info for anyone to read I found in a old thread posted by dieseldan I think his name was

2003-05 Various Running Problems, Check Engine Light; New EBP Sensor:
Trucks built before 1-17-05 that exhibit buck/jerk, hesitation, lack of power, stalling, stumble, black smoke, surging, rolling idle, changes in engine sound at idle or when driving at a steady speed, or with the trouble codes P2263 or P0299, may have an exhaust backpressure sensor signal that is incorrect or erratic. A revised EBP sensor is available if this is found to be the case. Part number 4C3Z-9J460-A. Broadcast Message 3815.
Normal EBP signal reading should reflect atmospheric pressure with the key on/ engine off. Typically, this is 14.7 PSI/0.88-0.9 volts at sea level, decreasing one PSI/0.10 volt for every 2000 feet of elevation. It should be within 0.5 PSI of BARO and MAP sensor pressure signals.
