Brotherhood of the travelling hub zerk

I appreciate everyone's contribution to this subject and have learned a great deal from them. I was experiencing some significant road noise and believed it to be tires at first. I did realize that if I took a left turn the noise disappeared and if I took a right turn the noise slightly increased. Unfortunately the day before I was to leave on a road trip I learned the passenger side bearing had failed by jacking up the front end and shaking the tires. I replaced the bearing assembly with one of the cheap ones ($115). It appeared to be a quality piece, however. I figured the other bearing is not far behind so I wanted to grease it as others have done here. So, I bought a special fitting. It is about 1/4" diameter with a rubber conical tip and a zerk on the other end. It worked OK but the rubber tip came off in the hole. I was able to get it out with a pair of needle nosed pliers. For a moment I was wondering, however. I suggest getting the right fitting from someone here if you have time. I also greased the new hub which took a lot of grease. It told me that there was not much grease in it. I used a Mobil synthetic grease. I think of tapered roller bearings to be about indestructible as long as they are lubricated. I am thinking that as long as these bearings are greased once in a while they will last indefinitely, but maybe I am wrong. I am curious as to how long my new cheap bearing and other well used bearing will last with the quality grease. My X runs so quiet now I can't believe it.
While on my trip darned if I didn't see someone at the campground where I was staying changing one of his front bearings. I gathered that this was not his first. I told him about greasing them but his truck does not have ABS so there was no provision. I suggested he buy his next bearing with the ABS sensor if it is otherwise the same so he can service them.
Again, thanks for everyone's contribution here!

Thanks, Pop. I'll get on this after we get home from vacation... And the lawn is mowed, fence painted, oil changed, bills paid...

It is possible, I do sort of remember an Ithaca but can't be sure. I have sent out all the requests I got up till about 4-6 days ago. I did receive two more letters since I sent the last bunch but those just came in within the last few days or so.

Hi there,
Just looking through the forum and wanted to see what the process is for borrowing your grease fitting?
Appreciate your help,
Kevin
