The mustangs were a 100 day project, a competition sponsored by the Mustang Heritage Foundation here in Texas. Trainers took one to four fresh-off-the-range yearlings for in-hand competiton, or older horses for riding. At the end of the training period we went to Ft.Worth and were judged on condition and their ability to handle an in-hand trail class - with required maneuvers such as loading in a trailer, picking up feet, crossing a bridge, etc. There were about 50 yearlings in my age class there, and (not to brag, but) both of mine placed in the top ten.
On the last day of the competition adoptions were held for all of the mustangs at the event and both of these boys found new homes. Which was the whole point - get them to an adoptable state, as not everyone is confortable dealing with a completely wild horse. It was a smashing success, and has morphed into a national competition held in several different states throughout the year. I no longer compete though, they limited the adults to riding horses only and I'm not interested in breaking a bronc. But I loved starting the babies with their ground work.
As a side note, I received a $500 discount on my truck by being an AQHA member too. Just had to show my card!
