Look at the Flowmaster Force II #17229 cat back. I have one on my truck and my dad has one on his truck. I installed both of them. The kit runs $210 shipped from Auto Accessories & Aftermarket Parts at AutoAnything | Truck Accessories & Car Accessories | Floor Mats, Tonneau Covers & Car Covers The kit does not come with a tip, you'll need to buy one of those separately if you want one.

If your stock cat is in good shape there really isn't a need to replace it but if your state emissions requirements allow you can put on a universal "high flow" cat.

Are the two valve and three valve v10 exhaust the same? I see that kit works for 99-04. Did the exhaust change is 05? I like the price of this kit without the fancy tip, I dont need to spend the extra $50+ for the fancy tip.

What the life expectancy of these aluminized steel exhaust kits? We dont have very harsh winters in my area, and we do not salt the roads..

A cat-back won't really have any benefit. You're best bet is to first update the y-pipe.

The stock y-pipe on the 99' (and select early production 00') is not that bad. Its not the same y-pipe as the 00'-04' y-pipe that necks down to 1.5" in both places. You will not see much improvement putting the spd Y on the 99' in stock form.

The 3V trucks have a completely different exhaust system from the exhaust manifolds to the tailpipe. You want a system for 99'-04' SDs for your 99'. The 3V V10 was put in the super duty starting in 2005.

I've had my system on around 4 years and it is in good shape yet. I'm in PA and we get snow and the roads get salted and calciumed up. I get under my truck with a wire brush and some header paint every now and then and paint any rust spots on the exhaust. If you do a lot of short trips where the exhaust doesn't get hot it will not last as long as if you do longer trips. I figure I should be able to get 6 years at minimum out of my kit the way I take care of it. The FM70 BB2 muffler that comes with the Force II kit cost over $150 just for the muffler only.

The clamps that come with the Flowmaster kit are junk and not worth using IMO. The one clamp that clamps the muffler to the tailpipe and fits into the stock rubber hanger rusts out quick. On both systems I installed I fabbed up a replacement clamp using a 304 stainless U-bolt exhaust clamp and some 304 stainless 1/2" rod and tig welded it together. All th eother clamps needed are standard.

What about a 2009 F250 V10. would it benefit from doing the y-pipe and the FM kit. or just the FM kit would be fine.

Thanks

If you want more sound you could just add another muffler or ditch the stock resonator.(if you have a resonator) If it were me I would add a nice stainless exhaust tip to your stock system and leave it alone. If you want more usuable power and a better performing truck look at a tuner with custom tunes. The Y-pipe on the 3Vs isn't that bad, I mean theres room for improvement but its not worth screwing with it IMO.

It has a resonator on it. I have no idea what it does. But I was thinking on the same line that you have suggested. I was going to remove the resonator and add a nice tip and call it a day. I was going to do a tuner when the warranty runs out.

What does a resonator do anyway?

Thanks

The resonator cancels out some noises and tones the muffler doesn't get rid of. The stock muffler is huge and does a good job of killing pretty much all drone, harsh noises and engine note. The 05'-07' trucks had no resonator (as far as I know) and neither did the 99'-04' trucks.

Some reading.....

Mine is a 09. I believe that its a resonator. It looks like a smaller muffler between the larger muffler and the end of the tailpipe. Thanks for the reading info about exhausts. After reading the info I think that I will leave the exhaust system the way it is. I will just add a nice stainless tip and call it a day. Let the exhaust do what it is suppose to do the way the engineers designed it. I will use the save money and buy a under the seat storage which is really what I need.

Do you know of a nice suppler for exhaust tips. The one that was on the picture of your dads truck look right. Do you remember or know were he or you purchased it from.

The tip on my dads truck I took off his old system. I then cut the tip shorter at a 15 degree angle and polished it up. He got that tip from the local exhaust shop when he had his other system put on. Only get stainless tips, chromed steel rusts up really quick.

The 05'up trucks have a longer tailpipe so you may be able to get a 15" or even 18" long tip on. You tailpipe should be 3" exhaust pipe so I'd get a 3" in 4" out 15 degree cut tip at whatever length you want that will fit. You can order something online and install it yourself or get a local exhaust shop to put it on. I usually cut the tailpipe like 6" shorter and leave a small amount of pipe extending into the tip to help prevent the tip from changing color from the heat. I always weld my tips on because I think they look better that way. You can get tips made specifically to clamp on also. Summit Racing has a ton of different exhaust tips but they are kind of expensive and they rock you for the "handling" charge. You can look on ebay also.
