I give reps out frequently for good posts, good information, etc. However, I also watch who notices them and who acknowledges them and remember that when I decide to hand them out again.
I always try to reciprocate when I get rep points, but I very often get the spread it around message.

Me too Andy. I try to spread them out and often times, there are posts by the same person that are truly deserving of reps but you have to spread it first. I can't remember the number but I think it's maybe 10 or 12 people you have to rep before you can rep the same person again. It's actually not a bad system because it's designed to prevent abuse by just constantly repping your buddies, etc. and it does that for sure.
Another note on reps....
The amount you give varies based on several things. If you just hit the rep button and put no comments in the box, it will be the minimum based on your current rep count, post count, etc. It appears that when you comment in the comment box in the rep window, the more text you put in there, the more rep points you give. Also, if you have a high post count, you give a lot more reps. And it appears that your tenure on FTE has some impact on how many reps you give out.....the longer you've been here, the more points you are able to give out in a single hit as compared to someone with less time on the site with comparable rep points, post count, etc. I don't know that there is a definitive guide to the rep system but these are things I've observed over the years on the site.
I've read this thread with interest and have noticed that there seems to be a lot of members that have more rep points than actual posts. Do you have rep parties you regularly attend. It seems that the regulars in the General NON-Automotive Conversation have a better rep than those in the other forum. Just wondering
I've posted almost everywhere on this site. I've gotten many, many reps from the tech forums over the years. Some do come from the GNAC, some from the Club, etc. It varies but I've never been to a "rep party"

If you think that there is some sort of conspiracy going on in the GNAC keep wondering.
It's in the Club that it's happening.
Become a "Supporter" and see behind the curtain!
Actually I've received rep points for my humorous contributions, political comment and technical sourcing from a wide spectrum of FTE users.
i have gotten more rep for tech than i have gotten from the club.
and Terry, nope, i still can't hear you. so here is a bunny with a pancake on his head.
PS; I just found a feature I did not know existed
Mouse over the green rep squares and a comment window opens.
Comments such as _______ has a superb reputation, or _______ has a brilliant future.
Ha, ha...The credibility of those tags are lost on some folks....
There, allegedly, were rep parties in the old Northwest Chapter.....back in the day. Probably the single largest reason the "Rep Count Delay" system was put in place. Keeps people from mining reps.
The first place I saw the pancake toupee d hare was FTE.
The sense of humor it evokes one of the reasons I hang around here.
I'm not sure if I was the first one to use that picture or not, but I found the perfect thread for it a few years ago and got quite a few laughs out of it.
As far as a 'rep-spiracy'.... I have no comment on that.
