if you already hooked up the springs that hold the shoes in place then you have to undo the one that has the park brae lever on it.
i find that grabbing the cable and wedging a pair of needle nose pliers in between the spring and the **** on the end of the cable will allow you to be able to pull the cable out of the spring a bit and grab the cable with the needle nose to give a big enough gap to slide over the bracket....

I finally got it...
got it on twice, actually. Once the wrong way, and once the correct way. And what did I learn from this experience? I learned to not unhook the thing unless absolutely necessary.
I used a screwdriver to separate the spring from the end, then twisted the screwdriver to give enough space to slip it in the slot. What fun!
