I just cleaned mine plus the IAC and the throttle body. My idle was getting a little ruff. Now it is smother and the trottle is so much better. I haven't driven enough yet to notice any MPG improvement. But the way the throttle is so much more responsive I have noticed that I get on it a little more.

IAC=Idle Air Control
It's a valve in your intake that controls the idle depending on the temperature of your engine. The PCM reads the temp from the sensor and adjust the valve to allow more or less air through your intake that adjusts your RPMs.
When your engine is cold, it opens, hence your RPMs are always higher. As it warms up, it closes and RPM drops to normal. This allows your engine to warm up faster and prevent it from stalling.
If it gets dirty, it won't move and gets stuck. Then your engine sputters when cold.
If you have a drive by wire, then you don't have an IAC valve. There's a motor that opens and closes the butterfly in the throttle body. Your gas pedal is essentially like a volume **** on a radio. As you "step on it", it sends a signal to that motor and tells it how much to open. I have doubts about drive by wire. You'll need to clean that throttle body more often. Drive by wire is probably why all those Toyota/Lexus have that unintended acceleration problems.

Thanks. I have an '04, so no drive by wire here. But I do wnat to clean my MAF since it hasn't been done. I'm amazed at how filthy modern, dry intakes get over time. My Mustang GT's throttle body and intake runners look as though I don't use any air filter at all. But without a constant spray of gas and air to clean them, I suppose that's just how it is.

When it needs it
I've heard everything from 30,000 to 100,000k. Depends on personal preference I guess. Just dont do it too much. Like they said, its expensive and you dont wanna accidentally break it.
