Exclamation 5.8 Rod bearings (knock)

My 89 is developing an engine knock i have stopped all use of the truck until i have figured out what to do with it.

I have the 89 F250 4x4 with the 5.8L and I hear a faint knocking in the engine while under a load. (tested by my foot on the brake and giving a bit of gas.)

I Have only overhauled an engine in school with he engine out of the car. How hard would it be to replace the rod bearings while the engine is still in the truck?

Has anyone done this on a f250? do the pistons have to be fed through the top? any tips and hints are greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!

I have never replaced the rod or main bearings while in the truck so idk about that. but if you plan to keep the truck, it would be wise to rebuild that engine completely of buy a new one.

Down here I can get a 351 rebuilt for $1500. Thats bored out to true up the cylinder wall, new bearings, cam, lifters, racing heads, timing chain, oil pump, pistons, ect

I think you're going to have a heck of a time replacing bearings with the motor still in the truck. There is a big engine crossmember in the way. You're going to have to take the intake off, unbolt the motor from the mounts and jack it up far enough to get the oil pan off anyway. At that point it's not much more work just to pull the motor and make it a whole lot easier on yourself.

Besides, with the motor out you will be able to look a lot closer for damage.

Agreed. Just pull the engine. If it's spun a rod bearing, you're going to need to inspect the mains at the very least for any damage from metal shavings in the oil.
