pull off the timing cover and line up the marks on the timing gears the marks that line up the crank and cam look different than the marks that line up the cam and the injector pump so its pretty hard to goof up just a lot of work to repair,I bought an 86 with a turbo 6.9 for $50.00 because the last owner did the same thing

I'm tempted to turn mine up a flat, just to see what it's like, but it seems to easy to mess up. Thinking about getting a performace one from our local diesel shop. They sell re-man/beefed up ones for like $350.

I shoulda waited a year on buying mine. Paid $4000 for mine, now I could get the same type of truck for like $1200-2000. I paid to much for her IMHO, but she has paid it back and then some. Made prolly 10k using her, that I wouldn't have made with the 97-03 1/2 ton's I was looking at before I went OBS. That and she's just such a beast offroad, I love her, and likely wouldn't trade her. But $50 is a damn steal.

You don't have to mess with that to turn it up a flat. Just remove the tiny access cover on the side of the IP and turn a allen key, not hard at all. You just have to turn the engine over until you find the allen key.

If you think you have the timing right, you may just have air in the system, these things wont start easily after opening the fuel system. Here's how I do it: Hold the schraeder valve on the fuel filter open while cranking until you get fuel... crank a few more seconds then release the valve and stop cranking. Crack as many injector lies loose as you can get to. I usually get half of them. Crank until you get fuel spurting from the loose injector lines, mine usually starts while cranking, then I tighten the lines with it running. You hear the motor smooth out as you tighten each injector. You shouldnt crank more than 20 seconds or so at a time and alolw the starter to cool for a minute or more between cranks.
