Thumbs up '49 F1 Doors - How do I get these off!!??

I'm trying to knock out the pins to remove the doors. The top ones on each side popped out fairly easily. The bottoms are a nightmare! I smacked them each 100 times and of course mushroomed the bottom, so I took the cut off wheel and smoothed everything out. I punched them another 100 times and they haven't budged. I even started to drill them from the bottom, but that isn't working all that well. I've got the cab tipped up on its back so access is very good. Any ideas??

Drill it with a small bit all the way through the pin then use a smaller size pin to beat it out Heat it up will help. Can be a pain 4SURE !!

It's easier to remove the pins if the door is off the truck.

Heat - heat - heat!! Heat the hinge parts (not the pin) then drive them out, an impact punch if you have one. I assume destruction of the paint is no problem?

I tried everything but the heat. I'll try that next. I'm doing a door swap from my F6 parts truck, paint damage is irrelevant at this point. Thanks!

I've used an air chisel with a punch bit with success. Heat will be your friend as well, as mentioned already.

I used a c-clamp with a socket(just bigger than the pin head) carefully tightened the clamp, handle end to the bottom of the door, whacked once, retighten/readjust, pop it again, wd-40 the whole time, no hard hits mainly light hits to relieve pressure off the clamp. 30 mins a side and didn't even ruin a pin!
Yeah, lucky...I know!

Since the pin is history you might try using cut off wheel to remove top/head of pin and drive them from top which is easier then standing on your head hitting upwards.. worked for me.... jwj

Wow. I don't see how you accomplished that considering those splines at the top of the pin right under the head of it.

I personally used a big 10 or 12 inch punch, a BFH, and a pair of vice grips to hold it while the other person knocked the hell out of it with the hammer. Hands down, those 4 pins are the toughest part of dismantling the entire truck in my opinion. They WILL NOT let go until every last millimeter of those splines clear the top of that hinge. Multiple discussions about this on FTE. Here's one of the last ones. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...inge-pins.html

Yep, the only advantage as stated is that at least you're in a position to give it a good lick. Which is also why it is better to take the door off if the screws aren't rusted even worse.

I lucked out, the PO had replaced 2 of the pins with 1/4" bolts, I pushed them out with one finger

I wanted to say...I know that I got lucky on mine! I reread this and it sounded arrogant to me. Not trying to sound like I am the door hinge pin know-it-all!
I am the first to admit that I got lucky, kinda weird cause luck doesnt run my direction usually...Then it took months to get the bolts out of the hinges!
I don't really want to cut the welds that hold the hinges in place! I hate trying to realign doors!

Those hinge screws were the worst for me, too. Broke 2 of them. Became one with the drill, lol.

Havi, I prayed to them! smiled at them and sprayed them everytime I walked by!
When using the impact driver, I even asked them,"Did that hurt?"

OOPH! I've been putting off messing with the hinge pins for years now. I broke down yesterday and ordered hinge pins, striker plates and the little dovetail doo-hickeys (my driver side one is missing)

Years ago I tried the "C" clamp thing and the BFH thing. I've managed to mushroom the bottoms of the pins pretty good so I'll have to cut them off. I guess I'll try drilling them out and then apply some heat. I'm thinking it might me worth the effort to build a punch for my air hammer as well.

Since it took me several years to order the parts, I figure with my current rate of procrastination it should be several years before I start.

Ahh, yes...there's nothing quite like that feeling of satisfaction from putting something off 'til the day after tomorrow, when you might consider getting to it tomorrow.
