2001 E450 p1218 and p1219

i have a 2001 E450 7.3 diesel and trouble codes p1218 and p1219 came up. I was driving and it then all of a sudden the engine died and wouldn't restart. towed it to mechanic and he was able to restart it after it cooled down but as soon as it warms up it dies again.
he thought maybe the IDM was faulty so he ordered a replacement and it seems like its only running on a couple of cylinders. got another replacement IDM and same thing.
he couldn't find any damage to the wiring harness.

can someone come up with some suggestions what to do?

i almost forgot, it has about 170,000 miles on it

Welcome to

CID stands for Cylinder Identification.

P1218 CID -- IDM/PCM - stuck high - CID circuit open, probably intermittent

P1219 CID IDM/PCM - stuck low - CID circuit short to ground, probably intermittent

CID output is pin 96 of PCM and goes to pin 16 on 42 pin connector.

Check for chaffing on the 42 pin connector wire harness where it runs over the top of the valve cover.
If you don't find any problem with harness separate the 42 pin connector and clean with contact cleaner.

Double-check the wire bundles on that harness where they touch the valve cover, it's not uncommon for them to wear through.
