I'm no Toyota guru, but we had several Toyotas at home, ask your question, maybe someone can help.

ok its an 87 4runner sr5, turbo 22re, he bought it rolled it was a sorft driverside rollover took out the windsheild and front left fender. After we bought it we found a receipt from an engine shop for a master rebuild( new rings pistons bearings rebored etc...) at 137,xxx. It has 167,xxx miles on it, but.... it puts out alot of blue smoke if it idles or if putting around town and you accelerate harder than normal. It also seems to have low oil pressure at an idle( only 3 bars on the digital gauge/7 at highway speeds) and it has a loud ticktack sound from top of the engine. doesn't seem to use much oil on the highway but 1 qt a week around town, less than 60 miles. I replaced the PVC but still have what seems to me as a lot of crank pressure when you take the oil filler cap off. Haven't gotten to do a comp test or leak down test yet. Do you guys know if the oil pressure fluctuation and tick tack noise is normal. I am assuming the valve seals didn't get changed or dried up, it sat in a field for 2 years after the roll i guess. Any thoughts?

Those old 22r's always have engine noise. You could start by checking your valve's to see if they need adjusted. Are you getting any fuel in your oil? Im assuming that truck has a mechanical fuel pump and I know when they go bad they can let fuel get into your oil system which could cause your low oil pressure.

Did it act this way since the day you first got it? I've had some bad experiences with used engines out of roll-over vehicles. All depends if the engine quit upon impact or if they stayed running while upside-down or on their side and were starved for oil.

Not sayin' it's the case with yours, just something to consider.....might explain the poor oil pressure and blow-by with such a recent rebuild.

Every time I adjusted the valves to spec on one of those 22r/e's it ticked like hell. I ended up tightening them up by feel to a little over half of spec. He said he has a 22re which is efi, so no mechanical fuel pump to leak into the crankcase. Sounds like you may have a cracked ring. Maybe pull the plugs and see if one's got oil on it... compression/ leakdown tesst might show you something.

Bad valve seals, but that should go away once warmed up.

I would start by doing a leakdown and compression test and see what your results are.

If the engine ran too long while in any other position than 4 wheels on the ground, it could cause the issues you're having, everybody else already mentioned possible causes and i have nothing else to add (no other ideas), the engine could have overheated while turned over.

22r and 22re motors are kinda notorious for valve ticking... You guys sould really think about getting onto YotaTech for help... If you're planning on keeping it for a while, it WILL be worth the extra hastle to get help there. Otherwise I pulled a few good reads out of the archives. Note that you should adjust your valves with the engine hot!

22Re engines are ultra popular in the yota crowds so there should be complete manuals out there. Also you could use the old paper towel tube to the ear (stethascope) and listen under the hood to narrow down the problem. The only thing I didn't see mentioned is a exhaust leak could also be causing the ticking. Depending on how bad the tick is and wheather or not the engine was "completely" overhauled including a head job... You might have a bent valve if they didn't do head work. How bad is the tick?

what a bent valve sounds like...

PS: if you search "22re valves" on you tube you should find 100 different videos on every kind of maintence and power upgrade for that engine...

definitely not a bent valve, all the plugs have a haze of oil on them, doeesn't go away when warm. I am worried about what damage was done when it was rolled over, but for the price i couldn't walk away. I got it for him while I'm working out of down here and haven't quite put 100 miles on it yet, so i guess I should propably quit messing with it until i at least run a full tank through it and get home to do a comp and leakdown test on it. From what I am hearing the valve ticking seems par so that was what i was most afraid of before i drove it home to him. Thanks guys i'll post when I get it in the shop
