When he stepped down the last time, and the Paparrazi got ahold of a pic of him wearing shorts coming from the hospital, It was pretty much known by then that it wouldn't be long. He looked to be about 90lb...and had to lean on his assistant for support.

I think his genius was in marketing......Recognizing and promoting the 'next big thing' before anyone else. I'm not downplaying him by no means....That stuff is very important. But even early on with Apple, guys like Wozniak actually did most of the tech stuff. Other guys (like the chap(s) who developed the iPhone) you've never even heard of.
The big question now would be 'What next for Apple'. Jobs was THE face and voice of Apple.....and most of their success since 1997 is tied directly to him. Was the fate of Apple so closely intertwined with Jobs that now that Jobs is gone, most of the 'shine' is gone and they'll be 'just another computer & tech' company?

While his passing IS sad, I can't say the guy was a "genius".
An "innovator". Not an "inventor".
The main reason he was so successful was that he controlled the products with an iron fist.
Apple Computer, Inc. v. Microsoft Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Which mentions Xerox/PARC, who heavily influenced the MAC.
PARC (company) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Apple I was no great thing, but it was produced cheaply using standard-grade TTL integrated circuits, and other off-the-shelf parts.

Personal computer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Again, a great innovator, and businessman, but not a "genius" in the classical sense.

What he was really great at was selling us on wanting...no check that...NEEDING his products before they even hit the shelves. And to Art's point...his real genius was in the way he controlled his product lines, price points, retail control, etc. Not to mention his ability to draw extreme high end talent.
He made the smart phone to be as smart as the end-user wanted it to be so that even dummies could use it.

Just goes to show you...nobody gets out of life alive...no matter how rich you are. I believe he once said that he was good at taking other peoples ideas...perfecting them...and then selling them to folks who absolutely had to have them. I've personally never bought any Apple products...never felt an overwhelmong need to have them.
RIP...good thoughts for those he leaves behind.
