What kind of JY doesnt give any guarantee at all? You can move the shifter through the positions and turn the input shaft to make sure it works. You can also check for play in the chain when its in 4x4 by holding the front yoke and turning the input shaft. If you remove the filler plug you may be able to see the chain's slop and check the condition of the fluid.

the JY i normally go to a one of the pick a part type. its great for parts that you can verify are still good on the spot, but your kinda taking your chances with anything like an engine or transmission, but the parts are so cheap it almost worth the risk. they have huge signs that read NO RETURNS, NO REFUNDS, NO EXCEPTIONS.
a transfer case costs 60 dollars.
an engine with "no accessories" costs 175.00
we pulled a 300/6 out of an 84 truck and didnt remove anything off of it, it had the carb, alt, dist, etc and they didnt charge anything extra more than the $175. the motor ran great!
3 weeks ago i stopped in just to look around and found a full k&n air intake kit that was on on a bronco. i took it home with me, it only cost me 9 dollars!!
ill check the stuff mentioned above and hopefully ill end up with a good, used transfer case.

1st question- do you have a speedo cable? Where does it attach to?
2nd question- does your rear drive shaft use a fixed flange or a slip joint at the T-case?

You're in NoVa, I'm in Baltimore. It's pretty close to you! I can think of 2 questions to ask to know if my T-case will work or not.
