Rear end problems?

When under heavy load (goin up a hill) it almost like the rear end is slipping. Is that possible?? When I go into 4 wheel it seems to go away. Coud this be because of less pressure on the rear end??? I have also started hearing a whining soud. I think I have that is, my exhaust is super loud so kinda hard to listin for it goin down the road. It used to only do it in 4th and 5th but now does it in 3rd to under load. Any suggestions?? I havent put a magnet in through the fill hole yet but will soon.

1990 F-250 5L 302 4x4 dana 44's front and rear If i remember right

Thanks Josh

If the whine changes when you change gears its probably in the tranny

your clutch is probably slipping, rear ends dont slip

The symptoms you describe are from a slipping clutch, as stated axles don't slip and just for the record the rear end in your truck is a Ford/Sterling 10.25 semi float and the front is most likely a D44HD TTB.

Thanks for the replies!! Im 17 and still learning about cars and trucks. I didnt think about it being the clutch thats slipping. It is getting a lil harder to shift gears but I also think Im getting low on fluid. I have been trying to check but not even a 19in breaker bar can break the bolt loose. Thanks again!

Josh are you sure you are tryin to remove the FILL plug, check your owners manual or repair manual but I think it uses auto trans fluid in there. The clutch should be hydraulic (brake fluid)

Sorry for the late reply, I havent been able to get on here in a few days. I am pretty sure its the right bolt though. Its in the right spot for it and its also where the book says it should be. And I was able to look in the book to find out the correct fluid for it. Thanks Josh

I know for a fact its low but I have not been able to check it yet. It has 2 slow leaks one near the bell housing and another near the transfer case so I know its low and its getting harder to shift also. But so far I have not been able to get the nut udone. Any suggestions??

Just got through checking it and it was half a quart low (no where near what I was expecting it to be). So we topped it off with mecron atf fluid. Started to go with gear oil but the book and a very good mechanic said other wise so went with that. Does any one know why the 5 speed takes ATF and the 4 speed would take gear oil????
