It's pretty easy to pull the intake manifold and watch to see if the valves are following the lifter up and down. Compression check is still a good idea to eliminate a burned valve as the trouble.
One other thing to consider - I don't know what quality wires you put on it, but that can make a difference. Also keep in mind that plugs 1/2 and 6/8 fire in sequence to each other. Cheap wires bundled close together can cause some cross-firing at the wrong time.
