Starters keep going bad??

97 F-150 4.6 Starters seem to last about 2 to 3 months then when cold will not engage until i tap on the starter with a hammer. Replace starter and works fine for a couple of months. Been through 5 starters in about 8 months. PLEASE any help with this issue?????

How far down does your battery drop in start up? Are the starters sucking the amps out of a weak battery causeing it to get hot each start and eventually causing a dead bar on the commutator ( hitting with hammer is a trick to jolt the commutator to move to a live bar completing circuit to spin

well with a fluke meter on the battery you should see a drop say like example 12.5 volts to 11 or 10.5 inload (cranking) also you can see a possible neg. voltage drop by touching neg.lead to motor instead of battery and pos.lead to battery pos. and read possible neg . voltage drop (loss), then get under there and touch positive lead to battery pos terminal a starter and neg lead on starter housing and read voltage drop in start up (cranking) This is a way to see if starter is getting full battery pos and neg , then to go further you can ohm out the battery pos cable cable from starter to battery pos terminal should be 0.0 to .2 hope this helps it will also give you some insite yo how the system works

Thanks, I'm starting to feel that the problem is a battery cable because every time the problem arrises for a few days i get a pop sound from the radio just after start up. I'm going to give your idea a shot
