I think much of that would depend on driving conditions and terrain. For instance, a truck with a 3.15 axle driving 100% flat roads would kick butt in the MPG dept. That same truck in the mountains might suffer a little.

Gearing is all about keeping the engine in the peak powerband. A lower numerical gear ratio is not always the best for mpg. So, gearing is also related to the engine choice. Running an engine below it's sweet spot is almost as bad as running to much rpm.

What interesting is that both these tires sizes are virtually identical in diameter; 32 inches, for whatever that is worth.
The 20 is over an inch wider and weighs more, that costs horsepower to the tune of 70-80 miles out of your 36 US gallon fuel tank.

I am a new owner of a stock 2011 F150 super crew 2wd 5.0. How do I tell which ratio I have? I bought it used, so I didn't have the dealer to tell me. Is there a way to crawl up under and look to see?

Unless you can crawl into the differential....no.

However, there should be a sticker on the drivers side door that will tell you an axle code. You can then look up that code online.
