ive driven both. the 4.7 dodge i drove was a 2wd crew cab, automatic. not sure of curb weight or gearing. my ranger is 4,300 pounds, manual trans, 3.73's. just by the "feel" of things id say the dodge would have it. ,might be hard to get a true comparison due to the weight difference and possible gearing differences. but hey, one way to find out. drop the flag, hit the gas!

Anyway...Ranger 4.0L vs. Dakota 4.7L...Well, honestly as much as I want to root for the Ford here...I think the Dodge will have it. There's a considerable weight difference between the two trucks, The 4X4 Dakota being the heavier of the two, and that will work in you're favor but it still might not be enough to give you the win. Seeing as you're Ranger is an older one ''Pre 2001'' meaning that it’s an OHV 4.0L, it only made about 160hp at the crank when new. Depending on what kind of condition the Rangers in now it could be even lower than that. I say ''Pre 2001'' because the 2001+ 4.0L Rangers recived an update going from OHV to SOHC design and they make 210hp at the crank and I think those would run a much closer race with a 4.7L Dakota.
Any way you spin this Dakota has the advantage. I think a 2000 Dodge 4.7L V8 makes about 235hp and when you compare that to you're Rangers 160hp the disadvantage’s become clear. Namely in the form of a 75 horsepower deflect. If you're Rangers a 5-speed you might be able to get a little bit of a lead on him off the line if you're good with you're footwork and shifting. But I still think he would catch you in the 1/4 mile even if you took the lead early on.
Anyhoo, a race is a race...it prove's nothing about which truck is better. And even if you lose the race challange him to a tug o war with you're 300 I6. I bet that'll send him home with his tail between his legs!

4,300lbs seems a little heavy for a Ranger...Considering a Regular cab F-150 tips the scales at about 4,700lbs.

Oh ya, the 4.0L's will destroy those old POS 3.9L Dodges. But yeah, I say go for it...Even if you lose you can rub it in his face and say...Well at least I accepted you're challange! ''Seeing as he won't play a tug o war with you're 300''.

My last truck was on '06 Dakota extended cab AWD, 4.7 High Output, 3.91 limited slip rear diff, 5-speed auto.
My current truck is a 2011 Ranger XLT 4X4 super cab, 4.0 automatic, 3.73 limited slip diff.
I haven't had the Ranger to the track yet, but my Dakota ran a 16.693@81.27 when it was pretty new (about 1,500 miles on the odometer). The non-HO 4.7 powered Dakotas are even slower. From what I can gather from magazine road tests, the 4.0 4X4 Ranger is good for a 16.5@84. Even though my Dakota felt a little peppier than my Ranger, the numbers don't lie. I think the Ranger would win, especially since your 2WD Ranger is lighter, and probably quicker, than a 4WD Ranger.

In one of my earlier comments I noted that her Ranger is a OHV 4.0L which makes about 160hp. You're 2011 Ranger has an OHC 4.0L good for 210hp out of the factory. I think the 2011 Ranger 4.0L could probably beat a Dakota 4.7L down the 1/4 mile...It would be close, but considering the OHC 4.0L Ranger is infact lighter and produces almost the same power numbers it should be able to take it.
I don't think the 4.0L OHV's 160hp will be enough to overcome the Dakota's 235hp despite the weight difference.

You are correct. I was thinking the OP had an '04 Ranger. I deleted my post as soon as I realized my mistake, but you responded too quickly.
