Hi, I'm new on here as of tonight.

Today I went to see the 1950 F1 that I just inherited. Engine runs OK, I'm not used to this manual transmission, and I have a lot more to learn.

As a 9 year old kid, I used to sit in this pickup and dream of driving it. Grandpa had already abandoned it in a shed, no longer to be used. 30 some years later, the title is in my name.

I'm not really sure what to do with it now. I'd like to get it street legal so I can drive it around a bit and get used to it. Then save up some $$ to start fixing it up.

Based on the pictures, does anyone notice anything 'interesting' about this pickup? Other than that I have some paperwork indicating that grandpa bought it from another farmer in 1972, I don't know much about it.

I'd like to hear what people recommend I work on first or what might not be worth working on at all.

Thank you for any ideas / help / wisdom you might be able to share with me. I'm not a mechanic and have never owned a pick-up so this is going to be an interesting ride for a while.

welcome looks like you have 1950 with the front clip of a 1951 truck.
your grandpa chose the best looking grill out there.
Dont tear it all apart.fix one thing at a time and have funthats my opinion.

Welcome! That's a solid looking old truck. Even has the heater and radio. A good cleaning and wax job would probably do wonders for it. While it is indeed probably a 1950 model like you said, it has 1951 front sheet metal including the hood, fenders, grill, etc. On the flip side, it appears to have a 48-50 front bumper. If only these old trucks could talk.

As far as what to work on first, you gotta be able to stop it, so brakes are number one. Then, since you say its already running, a compression test of the cylinders would be next on my agenda. How long has the truck sat there without being started or driven? Take your time. Enjoy it. Congratulations.

One more thing, if you really are close as it appears to having a daily driver, I highly recommend that you do not immediately jump in and tear that truck apart before you just simply drive it for a while.

EDIT: Well iwannaflattie was typing at the same time as me. We will have to agree to disagree on the grill. Lol

Nice truck with great sentimental value! I too am far from a mechanic, but you'll find this is great group... you may already know this but you are missing the oil bath air cleaner. Welcome!

Welcome to the FTE world!

That truck appears to have been worked hard, not unusual for these trucks. It looks like the cab mounts are shot, and the bed supports are, too. Crawl around under it and inventory all the areas that need attention, and go from there. I'd get an air cleaner on it ASAP, to keep bad stuff out of the engine.

Welcome to the forum, that's a nice looking truck. It's good that you are keeping it in the family. If you have any kids, maybe you can get them to help fix it up and share your memories of Grandpa's truck with them.

Welcome! Nice patina on the truck. I'd clean it up and keep it as is. The original wheels are in the back bed of the truck. Keep them to put on your truck. The radio is also out of a 51/52 truck of a 49/50 car. The heater is also a Magic Air fresh air. You should have an air intake tube running underneath the right front fender.

You already passed the first two requirements by posting picture and your location. The next requirements are to ask questions and get your truck back on the road.

Get yourself a bunch of parts catalogs and a shop manual. Also buy a some original or reprinted parts books. They show exploded diagrams of different components. Then, assess your truck in several sections and attack them individually. For example, first clean up the truck. Inventory what you have missing and any spare parts. Then assess the brakes, suspension, engine, body, etc. Pick projects that you feel comfortable with doing at first. As you work on these little projects, you'll beuild confidence and experience to attack the larger more complicated tasks.

Don't forget, we're here to help you and will guide you whenever you're stuck. Take lots of pictures of your project and ask a lot of questions, even if you think they're dumb.

Priorities I found important:

Brakes - gotta stop - check the shoes, wheel cylinders, lines, and master cylinder.

Fuel - gotta go - check the tank for rust, the bowl for crud, and the carb for more crud. Understand the need for lead replacement fuel addatives


Lubrication – gotta glide – there are about 33 lube points on the chassis – get them reacquainted with the grease gun. Change the oil – and at least clean the filter if you cannot replace it. Understand why zinc additive replacement matters to your tappets.

Electrical - gotta fire gotta be seen - There were likely a bunch of self repairs applied to the ol' gal. Some of them are less important, others really matter. Check the function of all the lights, signals and switches. Look for stuff that was added – try to understand the cause for the change.


Tires and steering – gotta roll gotta control - Old tires dry rot. While they may look serviceable , they likely will not stand up to any use. Likewise, the steering mechanism has been used and may not be safe at speed. The single biggest wear item would be the drag arm link cups. If you have wheel play, look at these first.


Understand – gotta have a clue – Get a shop manual – ya, ya, they seem expensive – get one and look at at it. It will eliminate a large measure of well intentioned ignorance.


Use FTE – this forum is a wonderful resource for information – parts houses, practical experience, and trouble shooting.

Great looking truck and welcome to FTE... We have a great group here with lots of knowledge. What year does your your title and serial number? As someone else mentioned it wheels on truck have outside hubcap bumps, cab is earlier (I would say 48-49 because of rear window and raised bed sides), radio and front clip is 51-52. I love the look of the patina. Just a friendly warning, you will need to learn to drive a double clutch truck... It just takes practice and passions..

Hello and welcome to the forum. That's the second truck to show up here in as many days that is a family heirloom!!

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to somebody who's just down the road from me (I'm up near Bothell).

I've got a 53 F100 that's a ground up build that's not been an assembled running truck in 20yrs (granted I didn't own it for 10yrs in the middle), so I can vouch for the feedback to keep it together and running while you work on pieces.

I actually just bought a 48 F1 over 4th of July weekend specifically because I wanted something I could drive and be inspired by to keep me motivated to make progress on the F100.

I've only had the F1 for a couple months, but I've learned a ton about them in that time. I'd be happy to meet up with you and talk about the trucks if you want to come by and look at my F1 or have me drive it to your place to look at yours and compare notes.

Also, there's a good local F100 club that's open to members of other old trucks too. They're a great local source for a wealth of knowledge about old Ford trucks.

Actually, that's the way it is going to have to be. For now I need it as a 'working' truck as we remodel the house (ocassional trips to the dump, picking up parts at the hardware store...). Once the house is sorta done, I'll get to work more on the truck. By then I should have a pretty good idea of what work I really want to do on it.
