97 F150 Hot Drums and Brakes Dragging
Hey guys. My husband bought a 1997 Ford F150 and the seller said he changed the brake lines, but the back brakes have draggged on takeoff since he bought it. Just put new shoes on it and it's still doing the same thing, but now the drums are getting hot. Is it possible that the seller got the brake line backwards and that might make the back brakes drag? Can't seem to figure this out. Thanks!

the brakes dragging mean they are not backing off when you take your foot off the pedal. This can be for several reason... first is that the shoes are not installed correct, or are adjusted too tight. You should be able to lift the truck with a jack, put truck in neutral, and rotate the tire by hand. Brakes should not be dragging but slightly. Second reason that that dragging can occure is the rubber hose on the end of the brake line that supplies the cylinder has collapsed inside and will not let the fluid leave the cylinder and travel back toward the pedal ( master cylinder). Third reason is the brake cylinder itself has pistons sticking inside and they don't travel freely in and out of the cylinder........... only way to narrow this down is to do some inspection and testing... Jack the truck up and see if tire rotates... remove the tire / then brake drum and inspect the brakes.. with drum off, push the pedal slightly and watch the shoes expand outward.. don't push the pedal to the floor... just an inch or so while buddy watches the shoes move... release the pedal and watch the shoes shrink back into position as the cylinder pistons retract. ............also look at the emergency brake shoes and setup if that is separate from the main shoes... some are seperate.
