Something is definitely wrong, what we don't know is if it's the scanner or your truck. It should work just fine with your 5.4. Many auto parts stores scan codes for free, so I would see if one of theirs works.

Have one . . . but they 'frown' on us having phones at work. I've already been written up once for stupid BS, would hate to add 'using my phone while on the clock' to the rap sheet, lol.

In other news, got the old suburban dragged onto the smallest trailer today. The hulk barely fit between the rails. Had the trailer hooked up to a Duramax, and tugging the suburban up with my 99 V-10 with a chain. Didn't take long to start dragging Duramax forward as well
Poor guy had to step on the brakes to keep the SD from dragging her away. I love my ford truck

Edit: sorry to De-rail the thread? You get out of work before the parts store closes? Curious to see what problem your having.

Scanner not linking

I have a older (canadian tire ) scanner which always worked on my other vehicles,it would not link to my 06 SD with a 5.4. I borrowed a newer canadian tire scanner and it linked ok, I was just glad it wasn't the truck so I ordered one with a few more bells and whistles from the Matco dealer should be in this week.

Had the same problem with my scanner a couple of months ago, which is a different brand then yours. I could read codes on my other vehicles, but I would not connect up to my 06 Super Duty. What I ended up doing was disconnecting the battery for about a half hour reconnected it started the truck and the scanner worked, try this it might work.

FWIW, I got one of these for $20 at a local store that sells surplus/overstock type stuff. It has worked great on every OBD-II vehicle I've ever used it on.

Amazon.com: CodeKey Car Engine Diagnostic Tool - OBDII On-Board Diagnostic - CAN Controller Area Network Code Reader: Automotive
Purchased this unit several weeks ago. Worked perfectly. No complains at all.

Easy to use and works perfectly.
Able to erase diagnostic codes off the car to see if they appear again after fixing faults.

part of the problem is compatability.

there are right now 5 different OBD-II protocols. Ford uses a different one from Dodge, there is one for Euro imports, and Japanese models have 2.

Cheaper scanners can read 2-3 of these protocols, but not all 5. I ran into that problem with my last scanner. Did some research and made sure the new one read all 5 protocols.

Whatever scanner you buy, make sure it reads the CanBus protocol. This is what newer Fords are running. I can't remember what the Dodges use.

otherwise, hope it's not your truck that is the issue

I have read a thread about this somewhere in this forum. I've also had trouble getting both my truck, and a buddies Ex to connect to a reader. The thread I've read states that many of the Super Dutys are actually obd 2 compliant, and aren't actually obd 2. Take a look at the emissions label under the hood and I'll try to find that thread.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...t-come-on.html

Here's the link about the obd2, obd1 business. Now that I've reread the thread, I'm not sure if it affects scanner usage but it might help in figuring it out. I know I couldn't get one to work a while ago.
