Transfer case noise when decelerating? 1978 F-150
Hey guys, sorry it seems like I'm posting a question every day, but I just noticed today in my truck that when I'm rolling down the road at like 40 mph in 2wd and I let off the gas the transfer case makes a little noise, almost like that of a piece of mesh being battered around or something. It's not horrendous grinding or anything but it is scaring me. I already know there is a little enplay in the output shaft of the transfer case because when you floor it and let off completely you can hear it clunk a little. Anyone have any idea what might be the source of this and how it could be fixed? (Truck has a 400m, C6, and NP205) thanks...

Is it like a loud clang or a grind?
You said its a clunk, check to make sure its bolted in tight, check the condition of the bushing, the slip yoke, etc before you tear it down. You're probably gonna have a little slop in the system. Grab the driveshaft and see if you can turn it back and forth. If you can, try and spin it as fast as you can, and see if its a similar clank. When you decelerate, you make the rear axle turn the trans/x case instead of vise versa.
Rattle/screech, it could possibly be that be bearing is being loaded more radially than usual.

Same issue
I am having the same issue with mine. It makes a rattling noise in 4 Hi only when decelerating. I rebuilt my transfer case because of the noise but the noise never went away. Messing with the shifter doesn't change anything either. Can someone give me a part number or post a picture of the shifter bearing or bushings? I do not remember seeing anything in the kit I got for the rebuild dealing with that, only remember the seals. What I am wondering is could it be a bad shifter bearing/bushing or could it have something to do with my pinion angle not being right? My truck has a 4 inch lift.
