What package is your Explorer?
XL
XLT
XLT Limited
Those will determine what tranny you need. The XL and XLT use a 4r44e automatic transmission, very easy to find a replacement. While the XLT Limited uses the heavier torque supplied 4r55e, and is very hard to come by.
You can also look under your car at the transmission pan. Count the bolts.. 18 bolt is the 4r55e.

So, I'm looking for one that isn't the 18 bolt, correct? Those bolts are on the pan?
I'm going tonight to look at the transmission. It has 70K miles on it, and comes with a 60 day warranty, and I'm picking it up for $250. I just want to make sure that I'm getting the right one.
The people aren't sure what model it came out of, as the rest of the X has been crushed. This place is a parts reclaimer...hell, they want 300 for the engine that was mated to it as well. I may buy both, and have a spare engine for the future.

Look, just have your old one rebuilt. Sometimes that is cheaper, the results are almost always better and longer lasting. Doesn't take much searching before you find the horror stories of remaned transmission. Most of them are rebuilt on a budget, so you don't get the best parts, you don't know what was wrong with it in the first place, how many times its already be rebuilt, what was replaced, anything.

$250 and me doing the swap is MUCH cheaper than $1250 and someone else doing the work...
I'm just trying to make sure that I'm getting the proper transmission. It comes with the transfer case and a 60 day warranty for $250, and only has 70k miles on it. I've replaced the solenoids in mine, and it didn't help. They have about 500 miles on them now. I'll replace the ones in the replacement with what's currently in mine, then install it.

Yes, just match up your pan bolts, you should be good to go! I will advise however, that you should go ahead and replace the torque converter when you swap out trannies. For some reason, once they hit the JY, the torque converters capabilities become very questionable. It's recommended anyways, and since you have that PIA tranny and transfer case out, might as well!
