fadded red paint fix

I was talking to some guy the other day and he said that he used to put ATF on his old oxidized red paint and it would shine it up and last longer then any wax. as you can see by my pic the paint is starting to go pink. Any thoughts on the atf? Thanks

I don't see that being good for the paint. Im not a pro or even a novice paint guy, but I would say polish it up with a high speed buffer and wax it real good. Take some time to do it right and im sure it will be worth it. Id imagine rubbing oil on your paint would be like rubbing tanning oil on your skin and accelerate the damage. Just my .02 though.

Shoot..maybe I should stop tanning then LOL (kinda goes along with my job)
Is atf an oil? I'm not sure of the chemical make up
What about WD40? I've also heard that will work ?

I've done the buffing time after time and it looks great for about 2 weeks then fades again.

When you buff it do you use a rubbing compound so it cuts through the oxidation and smoothes the paint? If not its basically the same as making it shiney by getting it wet, just takes longer to dry. You need to treat the problem rather than just cover it up if you want a long term fix.

Get a bottle of Meguiars Ultimate compound and a bottle of Meguiars Gold Class wax.

Do at least one pass with the compound and at least two coats of wax. That is what I did on my 89 when I first got it, took about 3 hours total.

A variable speed buffer and medium wool pad makes your arms much happier.

Especially if your dealing with bad scratches.

The dodge took about 4-5 passes with the compound and buffer then 4 coats of wax.

That is a pretty extreme case though, took me 8 hours to do the cab and front end but the difference it made is amazing.

After all that work keep it washed weekly and waxed once a month and compounded every spring. It will look great for quite a while.

Keep the ATF for your transmission.

I've tried turtle wax, carnuaba wax, ext. Might have to try the stuff above with a new pad on the buffer. I'm to curious so I'm going to try the wd40 on the tail gate tomorrow and see what happens.

Tbirdscott how much do you charge for the detailing!? looks really good

Do not use wd40 on your paint. the silicon in it will prevent paint from EVER sticking on it in the future. save the wd40 for your hinges

WD40 FAQ:
While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

OK, but from experience, putting WD40 on a paint surface will cause the new paint not to stick.

Ok thanks for the heads up, my tailgate has a bunch of chips scratches and bits of rust so when I decide to get the paint done it will get a good sanding and prepping. So I'm not to concered about my tailgate

Even with a "good sanding and prepping" you can plan on having fisheye's in the paint. If you want to totally half-@$$ it, then go ahead and dump ATF and spray WD40 all over your paint. If you want to do it the right way, Redrocket9.0 and tbirdscott have laid it all out for you.

No no. Half @$$ is just rubbing wax on faded paint, or spray painting over it. Rubbing or spraying all that other crap on it is just plain silly. For the love of fords don't do it.
