79 ford F 150 fuel tank questions
Hello,
I just found out that my fuel tank on my dent has a small leak. I am just going to replace it but had several questions. First of all, do I have to remove the bed of the truck to remove the tank? Or do I just remove the bottom straps and drop it? The other question I have is how do I knoe whick tank I need? With or without emissions? The tanks I found are 130.00 at LMC and 100.00 through Bronco Graveyard. The problem is that both retailers sell tanks with or without emissions. I believe the 79 model year trucks came equipped with emissions but not completely sure. Any advise is appreciated! Thanks

You can drop it out the bottom but it is tight. Depending on where you exhaust comes out it may be in the way. I had to bend the flat lip around the edge just a little on the one side so it would clear the frame.
They came with and without emission equipment. I think if you look down the passenger side frame rail you can see if it has a vent line running to the front. Do you still have the stock engine with the emission equipment on it? If not you can get the non emission tank and use it.
I may be wrong but I think you could also get the emission tank and just plug the vent if needed.

the easiest way is to drop it.
also just look on the top center of tank and if you have a vac line going to top center of
tank then yes you have emissions. the tank with out emisisons has a vent tube towards the
back of the truck. i believe the tank with emissions has the vent tube in front of the filler tube
notice the smaller vent tube location next to the filler tube on right side of pics.
with emissions hole, vent tube in front of filler tube on right.
with out, vent tube is behind filler tube on right in pic.

easiest way is to just look under the bed at your fuel tank.
where it goes to the side of the tank. non emissions tank
has a vent that is behind the filler tube where it connects
to the tank.
emissins tank has the vent tube in front of the filler tube.
look at pics above and see where the smaller tube is located.

Well, it appears that my tank is a non emissions tank after all. It appears that the hoses are crossing each other going into the tank. What fooled me was that the vent tube is in front of the filler tube but as they connect to the tank they are crossed. Looks like this tank is not the original and the previous owner went with a non emissions tank. Go figure! Glad I checked!

you can make either tank work.
if you had a charcoal canister in the engine bay
somewhere then you would more than likely have
an emissions tank. that hose on top middle of tank
i believe routes possibly to a steel tube on the frame
then to the charcoal canister in the engine bay
somewhere. i got my truck with no emissions on it.
so i cannot tell you where to find the emissions
charcaol can in the engine bay.

IW i saw a steel line that runs to the front of the truck throught the passenger side. It appears that there is no canister as the hose is cut off at the end. Its also taped off on the back side close to the tank. I believe it used to have an emissions tank and now it does not. This is the only thing I can figure out. Now my decision to make it go with a plastic tank or steel?
