I need a 5 lug dana 70 axle but am having one heck of a time finding one. I would prefer a 4.10 ratio but I'm open to anything at this point. I am located in Denver so one within a few hundred miles would be nice. Anyone have any leads?

 

Did you maybe ask the guy in Denver that you got your spare 19.5" wheel from. If he had three wheels for sale, might he also have disposed of the motorhome? It could be in a yard nearby. A month or so ago I'd have known of a Dodge motorhome with Dana 70 in the Portland area that I got the wheels and tires off of, but must assume it's gone to the crusher by now. I'll watch Craig's List. Stu

I'll also add some early '70s IH trucks had the five bolt pattern wheels. I parked next to a guy at a power show a few years back who used an IH rear axle under his F-5, he also had a '70s IH truck parked next to his F-5. He told me the inards of the same as a Ford of the same vintage. He said he bought a set of higher gears from some west coast Ford truck dealer and installed them in his IH rear end.

Another avenue to explore.

 

Dana 70: 1963/85 F350 (except 1979/85 4WD) / 1975/2011 E350.

1963/66 F350: 6 lug wheels on a 7.25" bolt circle / All others: 8 lug wheels on a 6.50" bolt circle.

 

Bill - If I may I'll take you back a few years and reference a private message I sent you asking about wheel #D3TZ 1015-C. At the time I had just bought two NOS wheels that still had the Ford part number tags attached. These wheels are the Budd #89340s that fit the axle member "1949 F6" is trying to track down. Most often we associate this application with Dodge based motor homes, but in truth Ford used it too. You told me the above wheel was used on 1973 to 1976 model M-450/500 motor homes that were built in Louisville. You said it was a unique motor home chassis, not an E-350/450 or F-350/450 chassis. With this information, is it possible to determine whether the axle used in that Ford chassis was also a Dana 70 as was used in the Dodge based model? And if so, can you tell what the final drive ratio was? Stu

 

M450/500's are listed in the 1973/79 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog:

1973/74 M450/500: Rockwell model C100 (11,000 lb capacity) or D100 with/without Limited Slip (13,000 lb. capacity) / 1973/76 M450/500: Rockwell model D104 (13,000 lb. capacity).

I assume that upullandpay has already been hit, but I'll toss it out. they will "do their best" to find the interchange, but my experience they aren't the bright crayons. You tell em you want an 61.25" wide ford 9" and they won't come up with the list that we all know (57-72 f100 2wd)... After you get some more makes models (dodge power wagon?) then you can dig through their stuff or not ($2 entry fee). East of Greeley out by the airport (where I found my F1), is a junk yard used to be called Anderson's, but I think it is a uwrenchit or some such now - they have a slower rotation, they don't remove the older models and crush them so fast as upullandpay - so a little better chance at older stuff.

 

If you haven't been to Martin's, you owe it to yourself to visit! (It may actually be the one you are talking about?) It is acres and acres of old 50's trucks, cars, buses, farm equipment, you name it. It's right on US 34. Caveat: I haven't been there in a few years. When I was there they had at least 20 BonusBuilt cabs, not all cherry for sure, but it was like a candy store.

 

Circling back to Bob's and Bill's references to the Rockwell axle and the IHC connection, here's a pic of one such model you'll want to watch for. This one was in a yard in SLC but is probably gone already. Josh Madsen got the 22.5" wheels off it probably 6 months or more ago before it was sent to China. But the picture is useful in helping you direct your search. Stu

Are you saying that this yellow IHC may have the Axle in question under it? I haven't driven past this yard for a while but it was sitting there on blocks last time I did go by, a few months or so ago? I will call them in a while and see if it's still there. Did you see it when you flew through ogden last month???


Also a yard here in the valley that has a few older dodge Rv's that the 19.5s came off of, also has a ford stepvan/delivery with 19.5" 5 lug wheels on it, so I'm sure one could be found with the ratio you want?

He runs a pallet business in the middle of the yard, and doesn't really want to sell any of the older stuff or parts (Ive tried, as I'm sure lots of other people have too) the good stuff will sit for a few more decades probably before he lets it go???? it's not really a junk yard or a U pull IT place, more just a guys large collection that was kind enought to sell me some wheels off a crusty old RV that the roof was collapsed.
Amazing what a couple of boxes of Girl Scout Cookies will do for ya when you need something!

Sure, it's probably the Rockwell that Bill and Bob referenced. But I thought I recalled you saying that you got to the wheels right before it was scrapped. I would have stopped by there on the way through if it wasn't 4:30 a.m. local time. But since it's a military surplus yard, there could be others I guess. Stu

 

Well thats what they told me,
"come get the wheels if you want them because it's going to scrap!"
and when I finally got there to get the wheels I didn't expect to see the truck, but all they had pulled off where the wheels for me and the radiator for scrap so it didn't seem like they were in a huge hurry, (at least at the time?)

I doubt there were others, It's your friendly neighborhood Ace Hardware Store, heck they dont even open till 9:00 am
