Ticking through the intake
Started my truck today with the air cleaner off, haven't had the air cleaner off while running in a very long time.
Anyway, I noticed a fairly loud tick. Thought it was a significant exhaust leak at first but when I put the air cleaner back on I couldn't hear it any more. Take it off and there it is again.
Is it normal or the sign of something going wrong?
Bob

Its a sticking valve, i just had the same happen with my 88 f350 that sat for 2 years.Take a squirt bottle fill it with auto. trans fluid and mist it into the air intake VERY CAREFULLY if you go wild so will your engine so BE CAREFUL and it will solve the problem
Also if you have a valve sticking and have been driving the truck regularly then you have a lifter or pushrod clogged and the valvestem is not being oiled to check this remove one valvecover at a time and idle the engine, the rocker with no oil flowing onto it is of course the culprit most likely a shot of carb cleaner down the oil hole in the pushrod will solve the problem! hope this helps.
