wheelhop??

hey guys, i have a 1993 ford f150 reg. cab long box with the 4.9l with a five speed. This is my first truck and i am 17 years old so of course i am experimenting with burnouts/powerbrakes hahaha. I have done three so far 2 of which were only one wheel spinning. But i was really surprised with the last one i did because it was full posi. What would make my truck lock into posi all of the sudden? Also when i first start out, i get alot of wheel hop. I know that this wheel hop is bad so i was wondering what causes it/ what i should do to prevent it?

Easy way to prevent it. Don't do burnouts. You could get traction bars, they might help.

I like this part of the advice. Buying traction bars for a pick up - 1 and to be able to spin the tires- 2 is retarded in my book. Not that I dislike a good burn out. But, a pick up truck spinning the tires is not impressive to me.

Thumbs up

Hey guys we was all 17 at one time. Wheel hoop is from the springs rapping up, bad shocks or tires not the same psi. also check for broken springs.

Your truck has an open differential, so the wheel that gets the least amount of traction will break loose and spin. If, by chance, both wheels happen to get the same amount of traction they will both spin, which does happen occasionally. I used to have a 302 powered Mustang II in high school which had an 8" open rearend. I installed some old slapper style traction bars and adjusted the snubbers so that the passenger's side would make contact first. With a little experimenting, I had it so that it would burn both back wheels 99% of the time.
The wheel hop is caused by the leaf spring wrap up and is very destructive to various components. Have fun while you can....when you get older you'll get tired of buying tires and fixing u-joints, clutches, brakes, etc.!

But yes some long bars would be good. But if you just want to get rid of the wheel hop look into james duff bars. They are like $99 and stop the wheel hop. I have slapper bars and they work okay.

I'll be impressed when I see you burning all 4 wheels at the same time.

Yeah thats lame. There is an SRT Jeep around town that can do it. Obviously you aren't doing it very long, just a few secs but its still something to see.

Here is my 2 cents. If the truck has been modified and is quick then do something about the wheel hop. If it's stock, leave it be and don't do burnouts, you'll just end up creating more unnecessary repairs.

Too bad there is no traction, I'd impressed if those trucks hooked up and actually went somewhere..

What a waste of tires....

Still don't impress me.... Needs to be a 6 figure car before my eye wants to see its power wasted into smoke.

Your guys idea of a burn out is a lot different than mine , a burn out is just to get some heat in the tires before a race , just a few seconds on the brake then let the motor spin the tires out , so if you don't have a truck that will spin the tires with out the brake theres no point , to the OP , a good set of traction or ladder bars will take the spring wrap and wheel hop out , but a 4.9 is at the bottom of the bucket for performance so i don't see the point in it ....Lew

Sell the truck to someone who will respect and care for it properly...you're going to kill it. If you wanted something to kill tires that still has a bed, get and El Camino or Ranchero.
