How to replace heater control valve

I have a 1988 f250 7.3 diesel and the heat dont work. I think it is the heater control valve because when I move the lever over it does nothing going from cold to hot but it clunks when it reaches cold going from hot to cold. i was just wondering what everyone thought... i would greatly appreciate feedback thanks
