302 power and rpm limits when boosted

ok this is actually for my capri, but im being kinda sneaky from the mustang guys...

I am building anew engine for my capri, another 5.0 (stock stroke) with edelbrock heads, 270hr cam, aftermarket rods, 8.7:1 comp, MSIII, DIS, so on and so forth, but the biggest thing about this new engine is that it will have an 04 terminator cobra's m112 eaton supercharger huffin' air into it

for those that haven't been around them, these blowers have a bypass valve that keeps the engine from building boost until the engine vacuum drops below a certain point (4" if memory serves me right) then the valve closes and the boost comes in. think of it like a turbo that spools instantly.

without boost I don't see it making more than about 400 horses, but I am planning on 10-15 pounds of boost so long as i don't have to overdrive the blower too much, and i will be running methanol injection as an intercooler.

with methanol injection and boost, it should be able to get close to passing the 650 horse mark.

with the torque of the blower, I don't intend on turning the engine faster than 6000 rpms with the exception of a dyno pull or a really important race (btw, the car is aimed more towards road racing than drag racing)

anyways, i'm running a low mileage 91 roller block, I have arp studs and a main girdle, and when it goes to the machine shop it will be line-honed, bored/honed with torque plates, and all the internals will have thier balance checked and perfected,

but im debating a couple of things:
a: four bolt mains, mostly since its gonna be line honed anyways.
b: a forged crank, cause with all the rest of the work being done, its just a little bit more beef and it elimates some machine work needed with the stock crank

but im not sure if its really necessary, since it will only build boost in short burst, mostly at lower rpms, it will be cruised around alot more than it will be raced (about 98% of its time will be w/o boost) and I think I will be limited more by the stock block than I will be by the crank.

and to think, this was originally gonna just be an explorer 5.0 w/ a cam. true example of the snowball effect!

I would give Crower cams a call- they have been building strokers for a long time IIRR. Forged crank- definitely if you are wanting to hit 6K & 600+ hp.

OK stop right there and give your head a shake. All the popular wisdom says the 302 block is good for about 400-450 hp give or take.. that's it. Yes some guys manage to make 500 or 600hp for a few runs down the strip but blown head gaskets are common at this level because the block flexes too much, and studs and girdles do nothing but help contain the carnage when the block eventually splits down the middle, they won't prevent it from spliting. If you want a motor that is truely reliable at this power level you'll either get a Dart or simply use a 351, otherwise you're just gonna waste all those other good parts when the 302 lets go.

What he said! Why spend all that money on go fast parts and start out using a stock 302 block that is not built to take the abuse from the HP that you hope to make.

sounds more like i'll just have to turn the boost thats available down, most of the parts were bought before i found out that i got a little one on the way, and a 1600 block isn't exactly in the cards now, kinda like swapping to a 351 would probably be too much as well. and other than pistons and cam, all the internal stuff have been deals from big discounts, closeouts and overstocks (such as new-in-box eagle H-beams for 200 bucks)

but if i can find a block for a price i can afford i'll definitly jump it, but for now it will be just turning down the boost to a more reasonable level.
