I did a total rebuild on our 88 F350 460 in 09.
A total overhaul consists of:
Head check for cracks and do valvejob; replace anything bad.
Dip tank everything.
Bore block to next size and fit new pistons.
Resize rods/ rebuild build rods.
Magaflux and turn crankshaft.
New camshaft and lifters, timing set.
New rings bearings and etc.
I discovered the machine shop that did the machine work could get me a deal on a total overhaul kit, even a new sealed power cam, within a $100. of rockauto without me getting involved.
The bill at the machine for their work and overhaul kit was around $1600.
I am still running the origional fuel injectors because another set would have added $400. to the tab.
I did all the grunt work and teardown and reassembly.
I spent over a month on the engine as a full time job!!
When I added up all the bills I had $2600. tied up in the 88 with out any payment for the many hours I spent.
Yes you could get a used engine for less BUT a used engine is what I already had.
Yes you can get a rebuilt long block for about the same $ BUT I know that this rebuid is all Sealed Power and assembled by an expert ME!
In 2009, it was difficult to locate an engine overhaul kit with the correct parts for the FI 460 motor. The pistons are different for the FI heads and
several of the kits had the old carb pistons in the kit. machine shop had to specify the ford part number on the origional pistons to get the correct ones.
Some of the things that eat up money.
Bolts, fittings, exhaust work, water pump, smog pump, belts hoses, just aboutr anything to make it reliable and powerful again cost $$.
I went all out on this engine because it is a work truck for a business and it has to be able to work when called for.
This is about my tenth engine overhaul.
Everything from a 215 CI Stovebolt chevy to tractor diesel and one high perforance engine, a 440 CI Dodge Motor.
The 460 ford motor is a nice engine to work on!!
My advice to anyone putting alot of money into an old vehicle is to make sure you are going to keep it and have a real use for because you will never be able to appreciate its value to get your $$ back from the rebuild if you sell it.

Hello,
I personally use Advance Auto Parts here locally (couple miles away). I use the below on line coupons all the time (they really work) and always walk out of the store happy.
Use what ever code best fits your need (depending how much you spend). Sometimes, they individual codes for batteries (BATT) and radiators (RADS), saving upto 30% off list price.
Good luck
