Great write-up.

For those of you interested in a Propride hitch here is a write-up I did about the first time towing our new trailer with the propride hitch - RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Travel Trailers: Propride hitch experience

It does perform as advertised. Just point the Ex were you want to go and the trailer follows without worrying about any sway. Since my previous write up we have towed several thousand more miles in all conditions and have not experienced any sway. Our trailer loaded up for camping scales in at 10500lbs with 1100-1300lbs of tongue weight and is 35'6" long.

The guy who manufactures the ProPride hitch lives just up the interstate from me. I keep threatening to visit his shop. I tend to believe one of his hitches will one day be on my Excursion... after I talk my wife (and myself) into spending the money for it.

After a lot of online reading I was sold on the Hensley Arrow hitch (basically identical to the ProPride) but wasn't willing to spend the money on a new one ($$$$!). After a little ebay and craigslist searching I found a decent used one locally for $650. I stripped it down, had half of it powder coated, I painted the rest, replaced 2 of the bearings and all 4 seals. I bought assorted small parts (pins & clips) as well as larger (1400#) spring bars direct from Hensley and now it looks and performs like new. All totaled I have about $1100 into the hitch which is less than hensley was selling their factory reconditioned ones for. Just something to consider if a sway elimination hitch is on your list but the price is holding you back. Here's a nice write-up from BarneyS over on RV.net from when he rebuilt his Hensley RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Hensley Hitch Re-build and Paint This project is really no more difficult than repacking a typical wheel bearing (actually 4 sets of bearings) and some repainting.

I don't like riding with the wife driving in just a small car. I'd be a nervous wreck in the EX towing the trailer. Probably be a physical wreck too. Thanks for the writeup, in the planning stages for Yellowstone again this summer.

I have to say that once the Excursion is properly set up, towing with it is no chore at all.

I had my teenage son, with his newly minted drivers license in the saddle after I drove the first 200 miles. I even made him drive through Denver at the tail end of rush hour. I must admit, I had to council him on his selection of down hill speeds in California, which were on the fast side. But I did manage to sleep during when it was his turn to drive.
