89 4x4 SC W/A4ld. Help Pls.

GF totaled my 87 in my sig. I just got an 89. Pretty much the same truck. The vacuum modulator eats a quart of ATF to 5 gallons of gas. When I pull the hose off the modulator ATF runs out and the engine smokes.

My question is how do I get the modulator off? I looked for an access panel from underneath but could not see one. I know the later Rangers have one but does the 89? And if not than what is the trick to get at it.

Thanks Guys

Arctic

Alright Guy's I am getting desperate here. Napa said 4 days to get the modulator. I got to get to the Doctor. Will it hurt the trans to plug off the modulator to keep in the fluid for now. I know it won't shift right but will it hurt it any?

You just gotta do it. Some of the explorers have an access panel, not sure about yours. On a lot of vehicles, you just have to deal with the tight spaces or remove the converter for better access.

As far as plugging the line, it will limp along, but expect it to shift like you are driving WOT.

Well guys. How many months ago did I start this thread? Time for an update. 3 times my apprentice and I ran the b---h up on ramps and tried to R&R the modulator. I DON'T CARE WHO YA ARE. with the cat in place there ain't no flippin way to get to it. The last time under we even tried to remove the cat. The air wrench spun the first nut round so that was out. Finely I pulled the carpet back and removed the 4X4 boot and inspection cover. For the first time I could see it. Again there ain't no way to get at it from underneath. This was plain for me to see now. And I still did not have enough room to get the da-- thing off. So out came the robo zip. A very handy tool even with drywall bits. I cut from the 4X4 lever hole down the side of the tunnel to the flat part of the floor in two places so as to be able to just bend the metal out and over towards the passenger side. R&Red "the little charmer" as ND would say and had the carpet back in place in under a half hour. It has been taking 6 gallons of gas one way to town. This first trip took 3 and was fighting snow in 4 wheel drive all the way. Oh happy day. There ya have it. "The rest of the Story" as Paul Harvey SR would say.

Cutting the floor from the 4X4 shift lever hole in such a way as to have two bolt holes to bolt it back to the cover and with the carpet back down ya can't tell anything was even done there.
