2008 V10 versus 6.4 diesel

I currently have a 2006 6.0l PSD and i am looking at going to gas burner. Any suggestions or thoughts. I only pull a 20 foot enclosed trailer a few times a month. I know the gas mileage will be about the same as the diesel but is it worth the money getting another diesel?

Depends on where you pull, how much weight, and your tolerance for high rpm motor noise, but the short answer is probably not. What's wrong with your current truck? Or are you just getting the itch for a new one?

I live in North Georgia but not really in the mountains. The trailer weighs about 3500 pounds empty. The current truck is starting to nickel and dime me to death. I have had the head blow, fixed with ARP head studs, have 3 of the injectors replaced, other things like that. I just don't have anyone that works on diesels who is reasonable in the price area. Just doesn't make sense to spend 50 cents more a gallon to hear the rumble anymore. Also, the upkeep is ridicoulous.

You should be in the clear then, especially after if they replaced the oil cooler and did the EGR delete at the same time.

Those are the main achilles heels of the 6.0 motor; as long as you keep motorcraft filters, and clean fluids and fuel in your truck, it shouldn't give you a problem other than normal maintenance.

Id agree. If you had all that work done, your 6.0 should be good to go for a long time. Plus, the 6.0 will get far better mpg than any gasser or even the newer diesels.

I'd stay with what you have unless you really need more of a truck. For the amount of what you tow it is not that much.

I need something with a warranty more so than i need the diesel. The cost of diesel isn't worth the money i have to pay to keep up the truck. If it was used as a work truck all the time i would keep it but it is more for personal use. The V10 i am looking at only has 10k miles on it. I just can't have a truck costing me more money than what it makes me.

Then do the math. Is trading trucks going to cost you money, or make you money? Just the deal, not maintenance or anything else. If the trade costs you money, how mcuh? In the big picture making your 6.0 more or less bullet proof wouldnt cost you that much money. I'm going to assume the truck is paid for, or close to it.

It's a good engine with a strong bottom end. Studs went a long way towards addressing the top end. Take the EGR and coolers out of the picture and you should be golden.

It is going to get better fuel mileage than the V10, especially when towing. If you aren't then something is wrong.

I've had the 5.4, the V10, and have the 6.0 and 6.4. For towing there is no comparison, especially when it starts to get heavy.

IMO, spending any semi-significant money to change to a V10 is a step in the wrong direction when that money could be used to make what you already have a reliable tow beast, that still gets pretty darn good mileage.

The best fuel mileage I can get with a tuner is 14 mpgs unloaded and 9 loaded. The truck is about a year from being paid off. I agree it is a beast but i think i got one of the junk trucks that everyone warns you about. If i can get 12 mpgs with the V10 i would consider that a win seeing as fuel costs. If i was getting 18 or 20 there would be no comparison but that's not the case. Untuned it is around 12 mpg.

I suspect as the current diesel fad starts to lose it's interest, there will be many folks asking the same question to themselves. Go to the gasser if your only towing that size of load a few times a month. I wouldnt have bought diesel for your discribed use in the first place, sorry just how I feel. If it's sittin or not being used appropriately, you'll continue to have issues. Yeah I know diesel trucks pull better, but if ya dont need it, ya dont need it.

I feel i got a good deal on the truck but i agree with you without towing i don't really see in continuing to spend the money just to hear the engine. Hind sight is always 20/20. Thanks for your thoughts

I hear ya man. Try to get a good deal on it. Most truck buyers are buying diesels, so you shouldn't have to look far to find a sucker, I mean buyer. Ive been happy with my V10. For my use its perfect. Weekend toy to haul a 7x16 enclosed trailer loaded maybe only 6k. I own a remodeling company so I went with the V10 if I needed it for work, but dont want to work out of it.

I have heard that before but i also hear it just depends on how you drive it. I am going to stay 12 mpg should be achievable. I will keep you posted as to what i come up with if i do get that v10. Also, i have read if you get a good tuner, you can get more hp and better gas mileage.

i am in the market also and really dont need a diesel but from what i have read it seemed like a huge dif in gas MPG. i am told by a buddy of mine who sells cars for a living they will average 10 in town but they will pull anything. I am already at 13-14 mpg with a f150 so not wanting to get worse mpg
