Spare tire cable lowering trouble!

Spare tire cable lowering trouble!
Well, as I was cranking down the spare tire cable to install a spare tire, (my truch didn't have a spare tire, as the previous owner sold me the truck without one), & the cable went down about half way, & then it then started to go back up towards the belly of the truck. I was only cranking counter clockwise the whole time, so does anybody have any idea what I'm dealing with here. Now the cable does'nt come down at all after it went back up to the trucks belly, & it's very hard to crank. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The cable has backlashed.
You now have it bound up in the winch.
Get someone to pull on the end of the cable while you crank the winch as if to tighten it.
It should come back out with some effort.
When it starts to retract again reverse direction while maintaining tension on the cable.
It may take some work going back and forth with the crank.
Once you get the cable down use some white lube and wipe down the cable.
